- Reviews medical records to code accurately all diagnoses, procedures, and/or professional E/M office and/or hospital visit levels using CMS coding guidelines.
- Enters all codes correctly and accurately into the appropriate electronic system.
- Follows up on all accounts as necessary.
- Collaborates with Coding Specialist to assess coding needs when volume increases or decreases so that all accounts are coded/billed timely, productivity standards are upheld, and appropriate time management is utilized.
- Examines information given to ensure all needed information is present and maintains good communication with the coding team so that coding can be done accurately and timely as needed without communication breakdowns.
- Contacts Coding Specialist when there is missing documentation and/or needed information from physicians or other departments prior to coding so that the coding can be done accurately and as scheduled.
- Performs all aspects of the professional coding including diagnosis, E/M office and hospital visit levels, and/or procedures with an accuracy of 95% or better.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Formal coding program required
- Current CCS-P or CPC certification required
- CPC with specialty credential preferred
- College level courses or equivalent in anatomy, physiology and medical terminology required
- 2 years demonstrated professional E/M and/or procedural coding experience, preferably in a computerized/electronic environment.
- 2 years of related professional level E&M and/or procedural coding experience or an equivalent combination of experience and education.
- Proficient computer skills, including experience with clinical information systems for accessing health information in an electronic environment.
- Must have knowledge and understanding of the official ICD-10-CM and CPT coding guidelines. Knowledge and understanding of the CPT Assistant and Coding Clinics.
- Experience with Cerner, ECW, Word, Xcel, preferred.
