The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, seeks a full-time Collections Care Specialist to fill a fixed-term position anticipated to end in late 2024.
Under the direction of the Robert P. and Carol T. Henderson Head of Objects Conservation:
Prepare art objects for exhibition, loan, and storage in accordance with curatorial and conservation standards.
Essential Functions:
• Working closely with conservators, mountmakers, registrars, and others, assist with or oversee object handling and preparation related to the loan and installation of 3-dimensional works of art for upcoming Art Bridges Phase III exhibitions. (See here for details on the Art Bridges Initiative.)
• Protect artworks by creating appropriate storage and handling supports, promoting systematic methods of organization, and adhering to approved standards for handling, storage, installation, and transport of artworks.
• Provide safe transport of art objects within the Museum for photography, mountmaking, shipping and packing, installation, and storage.
• Travel as courier to supervise or carry out the handling, transit, and installation/deinstallation, and packing/unpacking of artworks.
• Prepare and check condition reports and related documentation.
• Apply accession numbers to artworks and ensure proper object labeling in accordance with current standards.
• Assist with additional gallery and exhibition installations as needed.
• Perform data entry as required in TMS collections management database, in particular recording object and mount locations and movement.
• Participate in gallery cleaning program and perform routine dusting and cleaning of art objects.
• Promote maintenance of a clean, safe, and orderly workplace.
• Perform other duties as responsibilities necessitate.
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in art related field or equivalent knowledge and experience.
• Experience with art museum installations, exhibition casework, object handling, preparation, transport, and/or storage.
• General knowledge of conservation and conservation materials, archival materials, and storage and installation standards for a variety of art objects.
• General computer literacy required; facility with the TMS database preferred.
• Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
• Excellent communication and organization skills, and ability to work well under pressure and collaboratively as part of a team.
Salary Range:
Full-Time Salary, 35 hours per week
Salary: $45,971
