  Job Summary

  This is a Peri/Post CCT Advanced Colorectal Surgical Fellow position designed to deliver advanced surgical training in all aspects of colorectal surgery. The majority of the postholders time will be spent in the Operating Room under close supervision of the colorectal consultants, to enable the postholder to take up a position as a consultant colorectal surgeon within a tertiary unit in the UK.
  An ideal candidate would be on the GMC Specialist Register in General Surgery or at least be FRCS or equivalent.

  The Department of Colorectal Surgery consists of leading Colorectal Surgeons mainly drawn from tertiary centres across London. Currently there are 12 consultants working within the department.

  The focus of the post will be exposure to operative training. The department offers all aspects of colorectal surgery including

  • Complex colorectal cancer (incl HIPEC),
  • IBD surgery,
  • Multidisciplinary pelvic floor surgery,
  • Sacral Neuromodulation
  • Robotic surgery
  • Complex abdominal wall reconstruction
  • AIN
  • All aspects of proctology

  The majority of the time will be spent on the OR. Colorectal lists are all day Monday through to Wednesday. However, multidisciplinary cases with gynecology are scheduled on Fridays and Saturdays. There is no commitment to the outpatient department but there is an expectation that the postholder will assist the consultants with supervision of the fellows on the Surgical ward for the care of the colorectal patients inpatients.

  Attendance will also be expected at all the MDT’s and the monthly governance meeting. The postholder would also be expected to assist the M&M lead, currently Ms. Taylor, with organization and presentation of the cases. The postholder would also be expected to undertake one research project and one quality improvement project during the post.

  The expected case load is 150 major resections per year. One third of the case load would be termed complex colorectal cancer – beyond TME, synchronous resections, CRS HIPEC, extended lymphadenectomy.

  Educational Supervision will be from Professor Jamie Murphy and Mr Chetan Bhan.

  Job Responsibilities:

  Clinical

  Working as a part of the Colorectal Surgical department workforce covering an average fill of 10 inpatients on the General Surgical floor.

  • Working collaboratively with specialist consultants and nursing professionals to ensure that patients’ treatment and care needs are met.
  • Managing surgical patients who are undergoing colorectal surgical operations under consultant supervision.
  • Leading and assisting with new admissions and inpatient consultations, including morning and evening multidisciplinary ward rounds.

  Taking part in clinical governance, education, training and research to continuously improve and strive for excellence:

  • Participating in the regular in-house learning sessions and other educational activities as well as taking up educational responsibilities
  • Adhering to the best practice guidelines, clinical audits, and governance.
  • Active involvement in clinical governance meetings, including but not limited to mortality review, safety event reporting, peer review, and other relevant activities.
  • Continual commitment, and participation in mandatory trainings, including Epic electronic medical record system.
  • If interested, participating in professional development opportunities such as medical management & leadership, education & simulation or academic research programmes within CCL or the main campus in Cleveland, US. A tailored visit to main campus in Ohio will be available to all Fellows appointed to these roles.

  ESSENTIAL

  Qualifications and Training

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Fully registered with the GMC and current license to practice
  • Current UK visa or permission to work
  • FRCS or equivalent
  • Intercalated BSc, BA, BMedSci or equivalent (desirable)
  • Higher degrees including MSc, PhD or MD (where research thesis not part of first medical degree) (desirable)

  Experience

  • ST in Colorectal Surgery post FRCS
  • ST8 level or post CCT (desirable)

  Skills, knowledge and competencies

  • Ability to organise and prioritise clinical needs
  • Evidence of the diagnostic skills, and clinical judgment.
  • Competent in the perioperative management of the surgical patients including the basic assessment, investigation and management.
  • Competent in routine clinical skills including venipuncture, blood cultures, arterial sampling, nasogastric tube and urethral catheters.

  • Information technology skills using electronic patient care systems (desirable)
  • Evidence of working in a multi-disciplinary team (desirable)
  • Evidence of competencies in Colorectal Surgery as judged for CCT (desirable)
