- Copy, edit, proofread, and revise communications.
- Implement a graphic design strategy with content developed in alignment with brand standards to produce professional-level digital content for social media and the website.
- Shoots and edits videos to be used in various communication materials.
- Responsible for the research, writing, editing, design, layout and distribution of various print and electronic publications such as the community newsletter, monthly emails to subscribers, online news posts, brochures, articles and other marketing materials.
- Cultivate and enhance collaborative working relationships with media outlets and the community.
- Cultivate and enhance collaborative working relationships with internal employees and external stakeholders.
- Act as a media spokesperson on behalf of the District for routine requests and at emergency events.
- Ensure communication strategy is consistent and reflects the District’s strategic vision.
- Enhance meaningful relationships with targeted, high-level external audiences.
- Regularly collaborate with key leadership to plan proactive community and media outreach.
- Provide strategic advice to management and other internal customers regarding communication needs.
- Assist in preparing, submitting and supervising assigned budget(s).

- Capture, edit, and produce quality video projects.
- Utilize current and emerging social media platforms and effective account management, including use of analytics and statistics.
- Utilize website content management systems such as WordPress, website design, and analysis of statistics to improve user experience.
- Comprehend, analyze, and interpret technical information for targeted audiences.
- Make presentations in a variety of public forums before groups of diverse composition.
- Communicate in the English language, both orally and in writing, including group facilitation, collaboration, managing feedback, and excellent public speaking ability.
- Ability to exercise initiative and judgment and to function with considerable independence within established policies and procedures.
- Ability to travel between various worksites as necessary to fulfill the needs of the District.
- Bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, digital communications, journalism or closely related field.
- Two (2) years of professional communications experience, including media and community relations programs.
- Professional writing and editing experience.
- Website management/development experience.
- Extensive experience with a variety of social media platforms, including but not limited to X, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and other emerging platforms, as well as data collection and analysis of these systems.
- Valid driver’s license allowing legal driving in the State of Washington.
- Knowledge of, and experience with public agencies and governmental organizations.
- Advanced experience in visual storytelling, including advanced experience with video production/editing.
- Graphic design and layout experience and use of Adobe Creative Suite.
- Experience and knowledge of WordPress website content management system.
- Ability to converse in a language in addition to English.
- Communicate over the telephone and speak in person to individuals and groups.
- Sit, talk and hear, move about, operate or control objects, tools and machines.
- Operate office and other job-related equipment to include computers, cameras, copy machine, printers, etc.
- Lift and/or move objects weighing up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Possess acceptable auditory and visual senses to meet the requirements of the job.
- Frequent standing in combination with walking throughout the workday.
West Pierce Fire & Rescue (WPFR) is hiring a Communications Coordinator with a tentative hire date of November 1, 2024.
The Communications Coordinator serves an integral role in planning, developing, and implementing the district’s internal and external communications program across multiple platforms such as website, social media, and print publications. The position is responsible for providing professional, accessible, and compelling content and visual storytelling through photography and videography relative to current issues, initiatives, and events impacting the community.

Salary & Pay Incentives:
Salary depends on qualifications (experience, education and/or training). The individual selected for this position will receive a conditional offer of employment, identifying their placement within the salary range.
The following pay incentives are calculated as an increase to the monthly base salary:
Employees may be eligible for education incentive of 5% for a Bachelor's degree or 7% for a Master's degree. Transcript and/or degree copy will be reviewed prior to hire date and incentive approved; where applicable.
Employees proficient in a foreign language or American Sign Language shall receive a 1% incentive for each language; to a maximum of 4%. Proficiency shall be proven with an exam selected by the District.
If the employee enters the emergency response program, a 5% pay incentive will be applicable.

Schedule:
The position shall normally work a 40-hour work week schedule, with flexible hours to meet the needs of the District and is exempt from overtime under the FLSA and Washington State Administrative Exemption status. Attendance at required meetings, functions and standby/response to certain alarms during evening hours, weekends and holidays is necessary of the position. Regular, reliable and punctual attendance is required.
Employees have a variety of schedule options: five 8-hour or four 10-hour workdays; or the flex schedule with five 9-hour workdays (reduced to a 40-hour workweek average by earning 5 hours of time off for each week worked). Employees generally select a schedule option annually based on supervisor approval. Remote work may be possible on occasion based on workload and with supervisor approval. Controls over work:
