Communications Organizer
SEIU Virginia 512:

Position Summary:
The Communications Organizer will be responsible for ensuring that the union
communicates effectively with members, not-yet-members and the public using email,
text, multiple online platforms, local media, and materials. This position will help
empower workers to tell their stories and make their voices heard. This position will
create and design social media and communications campaigns addressing worker
issues. This role will work collaboratively with union leadership as well as Field, Political
and Policy staff to expand our reach and build support for our efforts to win good union
jobs, quality services, and collective bargaining rights.

Communications Planning & Strategy
● Develops and executes digital and traditional communications strategies and
tactics to support the field efforts of county and city employees as well as home
care workers to build their union, enhance the union’s identity, and build the
union’s reputation among county employees, legislators, and the public at large.
● Work with leadership, members and staff to develop messaging frameworks,
communication plans and digital strategy for on-the-ground campaigns, as well
as for building a narrative across the entire local union.
● Work closely across various departments to develop relevant content and
narrative creation, including digital outreach and online organizing for union
programs.
● Create organizing materials (digital and print) to promote the union.
Messaging and Content Creation
● Write compelling, engaging copy for emails, website, flyers, etc.
● Work with staff to create graphics, textables, digital and print fliers, and other
content for use online and offline (FB, TW, IG).● Create content and digital strategies to run across multiple channels such as
Facebook, Twitter, etc.
● Manages digital marketing, social media properties, email program and the
union’s website. Tracks and reports results to the president regularly.
● Collaborates with the president and staff members to gather photos, videos,
quotes and other communications materials.
● Designs and lays out a variety of printed and online collateral.
● Monitor online conversations and actively participate in them to build the
organization’s visibility.
● Increase reach, growth, and engagement of online communities to help build
support for our campaigns.
● Coordinate communications requests from staff and members.
● Document actions and train leaders on best practices for outreach.
● Manages event logistics and communications including strategy, message,
location, signage, visuals, materials, agenda, media outreach, spokesperson
prep and coordinating interviews.
Media Relations
● Manages media relations in coordination with the president, community coalitions
and union spokespeople. Conducts media outreach, coordinates interviews,
develops strong relationships with reporters, maintains clips file.
● Develops strong public spokespeople to confidently speak on union issues to the
community, their coworkers and in media interviews.
● Writes newsletters, talking points, speeches, leaflets, press materials, letters to
the editor, op-eds, background pieces and other collateral materials.
● Assists county employees with writing letters to the editor, op eds and blog posts.
● Drive an earned media strategy to help win organizing campaigns.
● Develop and maintain relationships with local reporters.
● Coordinate requests from local media, and identify and prep member
spokespeople.
Qualifications:
Candidates should possess previous communications experience; a strong commitment
to working people and justice; strong personal, verbal and written communication skills.
Candidates should also thrive in a fast-paced and constantly changing environment.
Successful candidates will bring the following skills and attributes to the position:
Previous communications experience with a labor union or other advocacy
group, and the belief in and commitment to economic and racial justice.
Exceptional communication skills (verbal and writing).
Understand social media analytics and be able to leverage online tools to
prioritize engagement over vanity metrics.
Understand brand-cohesion and good storytelling. Must have basic graphic design skills for screen and print.
Experience with creating textable graphics, memes, and flyers.
Ability to work in a face-paced organization with tight deadlines.
Must have excellent follow-up skills.
Demonstrated ability to interpret analytics.
Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy.
Familiarity with a range of online campaigning tools, tactics, and strategies.
Ability to work independently and as part of a remote team and can demonstrate
a strong ability to work cross-functionally.
Proficiency with Google products such as Gmail and Google Drive (docs &
sheets).
Video pre/post-production experience.
Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva and/or similar programs.
Experience with VAN/EveryAction and/or similar CRM systems and basic HTML
skills preferred.
Ability to design eye-catching content is a plus.
Highly proficient in Wordpress or similar CMSs.
Kindness, empathy and concern for others.
Requirements include:
Valid U.S. driver’s license with a good driving record;
Ability and willingness to work long, irregular hours, including evenings and
weekends;
Ability and willingness to travel within Virginia;
Relocation to the Virginia area is required if offered a position.
Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary ranges from $70,000 to $80,000 annually, with a generous benefit
package, including fully-paid health insurance, paid leave, auto allowance, cell
phone allowance, and more, as detailed in the local’s Collective Bargaining
agreement.
Term of Employment: This is a full-time bargaining unit position.
