- The Community Affairs Advisor will develop and maintain relationships with constituents and organizations in the assigned region through strategic outreach (one-on-ones, tabling at relevant events). As well as produce timely and well-researched written reports to ensure that community needs are an integral part of the larger Precinct decision-making process. The Community Affairs Advisor will clearly and consistently communicate community needs to the Community Affairs Manager through weekly reports, proposals, and memos as needed. The Community Affairs Advisors will create and execute regional direct action plans to improve civic engagement and empower communities. In partnership with the Community Affairs Manager, use the reporting matrix to accurately assess successes and areas of improvement.
- The Community Affairs Advisor will serve as a community relations liaison between residents and the Office of Precinct One, representing the office at community events by presenting certificates and resolutions and/or speaking publicly. Also, serve on project teams to execute short-term and long-term community engagement projects with excellence. The Community Affairs Advisors will develop an understanding of policy priorities and have the ability to communicate clearly and compellingly around policy issues affecting the Precinct One community.

Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university
Equivalent work experience may be considered in lieu of the specified educational requirements.
At least one (1) year of experience in addressing constituent concerns, or community engagement or outreach.
Proficiency in Microsoft software applications which could include Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint
- Knowledge of ways to engage communities and perform outreach efforts.
- Skilled at initiating conversations with various stakeholders to find out important matters to them and their communities.
- Ability to synthesize complex information from multiple sources and develop recommendations rooted in social and racial justice.
- Ability to write concisely.
- Ability to evaluate trends and make suggestions for improvement of community-related programs.
- Valid driver’s license (Texas upon hire) and a good driving record.

- This job operates in both indoor and outdoor environments.
- Exposure to various weather conditions, temperature variations, loud noises and possible dangerous chemicals may be encountered.
- Occasional travel within Harris County. Files and boxes must be transported weighing up to 25 lbs.

You will be an integral member of Precinct One’s CAA team, reporting to the Community Affairs Manager. The Community Affairs Advisor will work collaboratively within a team to support the implementation of strategic goals for engaging and empowering the community as well as working within a defined geographical region with Precinct One.

The Community Affairs and Advocacy Department’s mission is to advance equality, fairness, and justice for all people we serve by developing effective and inclusive outreach, organizing, mobilization, and information-sharing strategies. We aim to improve civic engagement, empower communities and advance public policy priorities established by the precinct and community, and connect constituents to services. Ultimately, we seek to strengthen and solidify Commissioner Ellis and the Precinct's presence in the community through open dialogue between our team and our constituents.About Precinct One
There are four precincts in Harris County, the most populous county in Texas and the third most populous county in the United States. There are four elected commissioners, who along with an elected county judge serve as members of the Harris County Commissioners Court, the administrative head of the county’s government. With approximately 1.1 million residents, Harris County Precinct One is a diverse, urban local government unit that covers 363 square miles; if it were an independent city, it would be among the nation’s fifteen largest. The Precinct’s multi-racial, multi-ethnic population is roughly 39 percent African American, 37 percent Latino, 18 percent Anglo, 5 percent Asian, and 1 percent other.
Precinct One includes 876 miles of road, stretches south to Brazoria County, and also reaches into eastern and northern sections of Harris County. The Precinct includes a large swath of downtown Houston, including the Harris County downtown Court Complex, Toyota Center, Minute Maid Park, and BBVA Compass Stadium. Other notable landmarks include the 263-acre NRG Park complex and the Texas Medical Center, a world-renowned collection of 61 institutions devoted to medical research, training, and care. The Precinct is also the higher education home to Houston Community College, Rice University, Texas Southern University, the University of Houston’s main and downtown campuses, and the University of St. Thomas.
