- Develop a Community Engagement Playbook outlining tools, best practices, and protocols to guide consistent, equitable, and effective engagement across departments for citywide engagement efforts.
- Partner with City departments to develop and implement community engagement strategies and activations during the lead-up to, and during, the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Ensure efforts are culturally responsive, inclusive, and representative of Long Beach’s diverse communities.
- Design and launch a citywide volunteer program to support the City’s 2028 Olympic and Paralympic-related activities, legacy initiatives, and community activations—helping to build an infrastructure that can endure beyond the Games.
- Serve as a staff liaison for the City’s Community Advisory Committees focused on Youth Sports, Small Business, Arts & Culture, Workforce Development and Economic Inclusion, and the Legacy Foundation.
- Facilitate community meetings and presentations to share updates about the City’s 2028 Games planning and receive input from stakeholders.
- In collaboration with the Office of Public Affairs and Communications, develop core messaging, and branding for the City.
- Track and monitor engagement metrics, community feedback, and participation trends to assess impact and inform continuous improvement of engagement strategies.
- Draft memos and presentations for City leadership, City Council, and community stakeholders related to community engagement activities and outcomes.
- Manage the logistics of engagement events, including securing venues, coordinating outreach materials, and overseeing event staffing.
- Maintain a calendar of engagement activities and provide regular updates to the Deputy City Manager.
- Support City Manager departments and teams in developing community engagement strategies.
- Possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Communications, Political Science, Sociology, Public Administration, Urban Planning, or a related field OR
- Professional experience beyond the minimum qualifications may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis.
- Three (3) years of full-time, equivalent, paid, professional experience working in role related to community engagement and volunteer program development.
- A graduate level degree.
- Extensive experience with Microsoft Office Suite
- Self-motivated and driven to track and achieve project milestones.
- Experience working with advisory committees, diverse stakeholders, and government or nonprofit agencies.
- Demonstrated success developing and managing community programs, volunteer networks, or large-scale public initiatives.
- Excellent project management, facilitation, and written communication skills.
- Deep understanding of equity-centered engagement practices and cultural competency in diverse communities.
DESCRIPTION
The City Manager’s Office is recruiting for a full-time, unclassified Community Engagement Officer (Assistant to the City Manager). This position will report directly to a Deputy City Manager, supporting the City’s preparations for the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games by leading and coordinating inclusive community engagement strategies. This position will play a central role in ensuring that the City's planning and legacy efforts reflect the voices and priorities of Long Beach residents, businesses, and diverse cultural communities. This will be a temporary position through Fiscal Years 2026-2028, ending September 30, 2028.
The City Manager is responsible for the efficient administration of all departments, except for the elected offices, City Clerk, Office of Police Oversight, and the semi-autonomous departments.EDUCATIONEXPERIENCEDESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
