      About our team

Dep Sec Immi & Settlement Servs | Citizenship & Multicultural Affairs | Community Engagement | Community Liaison

The Community Liaison Network is part of the Immigration Group in the Department of Home Affairs. The network supports an inclusive multicultural Australia by enhancing the Australian Government's understanding of communities, informing policy and programs, and empowering communities to access Government information and services.

Officers in the network work across Australia in five regions, each led by a Regional Director.

As a Community Liaison Officer (CLO), you will represent the Department and Australian Government and directly work with ethnic, cultural and faith-based community leaders and organisations including but not limited to peak bodies, federal, state and local government representatives, not-for-profit organisations, service providers and other organisations with multicultural stakeholders and clients.

You will engage with communities and stakeholders on matters relating to the work of Home Affairs, and at times of the Australian Government more broadly. The topics you engage on vary and are driven by national and regional strategic priorities, as well as community needs.

Through your work, you will build and maintain relationships with communities and stakeholders by:

      • Communicating official information to multicultural communities, helping them better understand Government policies and programs
      • Listening to community members about their priorities, concerns and impacts of Government policies and programs on them
      • Providing the challenges to social inclusion and barriers to participation you hear to Government, which may inform future changes.

      Our ideal candidate

We are looking for resilient people with strong strategic thinking and communication skills. We want people who can strategically drive conversations to achieve the intended outcomes, and manage relationships even when conversations are both sensitive and challenging.

We want solid communicators - tailoring government information and messaging to suit their audience's needs. You will need to collate and communicate community sentiment and questions to and for colleagues in other parts of the Department and Government in a clear and impartial manner, verbally and in writing through various reports, briefs and other documents.

You will have the ability to prioritise your tasks and effort effectively, be flexible, agile and responsive. You will be invited to attend community and stakeholder events and meetings as a representative of the department. Please note, some of these activities will be outside standard business hours and may be regional locations.

      Duties and responsibilities

      • Initiate, build and strategically maintain effective relationships with stakeholders to support business objectives
      • Plan and prepare for engagements, contribute to higher level engagement plans, and manage risks and information appropriately
      • Engage with stakeholders through various channels, and prepare high quality engagement reports and summaries with own analysis
      • Independently represent the Department in a range of circumstances and environments, including with hostile or divided audiences
      • Identify and provide appropriate resources and information to support communities
      • Anticipate and respond verbally and in writing to complex and sensitive stakeholder enquiries and issues
      • Have an understanding of relevant legislation and policy guidelines and use other resources available to resolve enquiries
      • Maintain an understanding of the broader departmental, Government and international environments
      • Work collaboratively with departmental and Government stakeholders to seek input and assistance and achieve results
      • Undertake research and data analysis under limited direction, present results, apply judgement and solve problems
      • Develop and maintain comprehensive knowledge of key communities and stakeholders, and relevant domestic and international events
      • Contribute to short-term longer-term team objectives, and support colleagues and managers to achieve them
      • Identify business improvement opportunities and assist with relevant projects and tasks.
