      Community Paramedicine Officer

      FLSA: Non-Exempt

      Reports to: Section Chief of EMS

      Summary

      Under the administrative direction of the Chief of EMS the Community Paramedic provides proactive care that is intended to help improve the overall health and wellness of community and program participants. The Community Paramedic initiates activities to reduce high volume utilizers through the investigation of and coordination with 911 and community partners to address chronic patient issues, conducts home visits to reduce 911 activations, encourages and facilitates use of health care services more appropriate to the needs of the patient than the hospital emergency department.

      Duties and Responsibilities

      The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

      • Provides skilled, professional, and compassionate mobile integrated healthcare to citizens and visitors of Sandy Springs.
      • Care Coordination to include examining, treating, and screening health services for patients.
      • Observes, records, and reports to physician patient’s conditions and reactions to drugs, treatments, and significant incidents.
      • Functions as physician and hospital extender through advanced protocol utilization.
      • Serves as trained navigator of community resources.
      • Comprehensive knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services, including setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction. Ability to handle a variety of customer service issues with tact and diplomacy in a confidential manner.
      • Ability to communicate ideas effectively, including the preparation of reports and logs. Ability to listen and understand directions, information and ideas presented verbally and in writing.
      • Attends community meetings and provides community training, as requested.
      • Ability to prepare and deliver reports on activity and community involvement.
      • Perform other duties as assigned depending on the community need and/or home situation.
      • Performs all job duties and responsibilities as described for Paramedic.
      • Performs other duties as assigned.

      Job Requirements

      The following specifications are intended to outline the minimum qualifications necessary for entry into the position and do not necessarily convey the qualifications of incumbents within the position.

      Knowledge of:

      • Office procedures, methods, and equipment including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databases.
      • Extensive knowledge of the EMS system in Sandy Springs, including Basic Life Support

      (BLS) and Advanced Life Support (ALS) medical protocols, Departmental operating

      procedures and incident command.

      • Extensive knowledge of principles and practices of pre-hospital medicine at the EMT-P level.
      • Patient Care Reporting systems
      • Emergency Vehicle operation
      • Principles of business letter writing and report preparation.
      • English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.

      Ability to:

      • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a broad range of people and

      organizations.

      • Work in a group setting with broad range of interests, overcoming conflicts to develop

      consensus around reasonable preparedness efforts.

      • Ability and willingness to establish and maintain effective, amicable relations with co-workers and the public.
      • Remain calm during emergency operations, analyzing information and developing plans of action.
      • Clearly communicate conditions and recommendations.
      • Maintain the absolute confidentiality of sensitive files, data and materials accessed,

      discussed, or observed while working with City staff and others.

      • Prioritize tasks and projects, work independently being self-motivated to identify and

      complete tasks and projects with minimal supervision.

      • Maintain flexibility and adaptability to meet the needs of changing circumstances.
      • Understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
      • Work effectively as a team member.
      • Ability to maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
      • Physical ability to perform job, including but not limited to:
        • Stabilize and lift patients with backboard and cot.
        • Move medical equipment to include, but not limited to, cardiac monitor (30 lbs.) oxygen, and medical bags (25 lbs.)

      Minimum Qualifications:

      Any combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job qualifies.

      • Current Paramedic certification in the state of Georgia or current National Registry. Must have Ga state license prior to hire date.
      • Minimum of two years of experience as a Paramedic
      • Current certification in CPR and ACLS
      • Valid State of Georgia Driver’s License
      • Must successfully complete the International Board of Specialty Certification (IBSC) community Paramedicine exam within one year of hire date.

      Working Conditions:

      This position may include stressful situations involving trauma, illness, psychopathology and other

      challenging patient interactions. Work is typically performed in a 40-hour work week but may involve shift work and off-duty recall for major emergencies, including weekends and holidays as required in an emergency services organization. Work is performed in a variety of settings including offices, fire stations, emergency scenes, and emergency response vehicles.

      Physical Demands:

      Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in an office setting; walk, stand, or sit for prolonged periods of time; occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination including use of a computer keyboard; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

      The emergency environment may include unusual modes of communication, extreme noise,

      discomfort and hazard. It may also involve working with citizens experiencing a wide range of emotions (rage, grief, confusion, etc.) because of an emergency. May be exposed to infectious diseases, which require the use of protective equipment, and exposure to the elements.

      Vision:

      See in the normal visual range with or without correction; vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment.

      Hearing:

      Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.
