- Operates a marked police vehicle enforcing parking laws and directing traffic; issues parking citations; performs traffic control; reports observed traffic hazards; initiates impound action on abandoned vehicles; assists stranded motorists; investigates minor traffic collisions.
- Investigates and writes crime reports when no suspect is present; investigates complaints and cites violators; investigates, collects evidence and writes reports on burglaries, thefts, malicious mischief and other crimes; appears in court as required.
- Collects and preserves evidence in accordance with established procedures; may assist in the care and custody of prisoners; conducts jail bookings; photographs and fingerprints prisoners.
- Maintains inventory of department property and supplies; performs a variety of clerical duties as assigned.
- Collects and preserves evidence in accordance with established procedures; inventories, tags, and disposes of evidence and found property, and maintains security; releases evidence to court or other parties; transports evidence to the crime laboratory for analysis.
- Delivers, files and follows up on misdemeanor/felony custody and/or non-custody cases with the District Attorney’s or Clerk’s Office; delivers Probable Cause Declarations and acquires necessary signature(s); registers offenders.
- Maintains records and performs a variety of clerical duties as assigned.
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Interpret, apply, and explain department policies, rules, laws, and regulations.
- Learn radio codes and to operate a police radio.
- Meet the public in situations requiring diplomacy and tact.
- Deal constructively with conflict and develop effective resolutions.
- Represent the City in a variety of meetings.
- Write clear and accurate reports.
- Use correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling.
- Perform a variety of clerical duties.
- Understand and follow verbal and written directions.
- Observe and accurately recall names, faces, and details of incidents.
- Work independently.
- Learn state and local laws and apply to a given set of circumstances.
- Meet the physical requirements established by the City.
- Graduation from high school or equivalent; and
- Two (2) years of varied specialized clerical experience with substantial public contact work and/or police related field.
- Possession of high school diploma or equivalent and a Class C California driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record.
- Must be 18 years of age at time of appointment.
- Must be free of felony convictions and pass an extensive background investigation to include a polygraph and a psychological examination.

The City of Bell Gardens Police Department (BGPD) is seeking a highly motivated, public service oriented individual for Community Services Officer.
Under general supervision, the Community Services Officer performs a variety of non-hazardous support duties as a non-sworn, non-peace officer in an assigned division of the Police Department; performs related clerical tasks; performs related duties as required.
The Community Services Officer (CSO) is a uniformed assignment and performs a variety of duties within the guidelines of the Department in support of assignments related to prevention of crime and protection of property. Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

The ability to analyze situations and adopt an effective and reasonable course of action; work well under pressure and in stressful situations. College level courses in Criminal Justice or a related field and the ability to speak Spanish are also desirable.
Knowledge and Skill Levels
Some knowledge of related department policies, rules, laws, and regulations; report writing procedure; general office procedures. Skill in the operation of a laptop/desktop computer and knowledge of Microsoft Office Applications: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
