      Department of Pathology at UAB School of Medicine is seeking an outstanding candidate for the position of Computational Biologist to support a new research program that is funded both by SOM funds and funds from NIH the Barrier Immunity, Inflammation and Neoplasia, or BIIN, Program. The successful candidate must hold a PhD with post-doctoral training related to computational biology and have a minimum of 2-3 years of post-graduate experience. A successful candidate will have advanced experience in computational data analysis of omics studies, as a well as experience in personnel management and team science. Experience in teaching undergrad and grad trainees is desired. The candidate should also be proficient in written and verbal communication skills and have experience in grant-writing. Other research experience in bench science related to molecular biology studies and a basic understanding of immunology will be helpful but not required.

      Duties and Responsibilities

      The majority of the successful candidate's effort will be devoted to the support of 'omics'-type analyses for the BIIN Program headed by Dr. Weaver. This Computational Biologist position will take responsibility for complete oversight of the bioinformatics component of this program, in consultation with the PI (Dr. Weaver). S/he will oversee day-to-day informatics support for the Weaver group, as well as additional core faculty in the BIIN Program as they are added to the extended group. This will include: 1) Performing computational data analysis of omics studies (e.g., scRNA-seq, bulk RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, etc.); 2) Performing pipeline development, web application development, maintenance of documentation and training guides; 3) Providing computational support services such as study design; 4) Contributing to figure design for publications; and 5) Overseeing all informatics-related data management. An important component of the candidate's effort will be devoted to teaching. The successful candidate will be strongly encouraged to participate in the instruction of colleagues, technical staff, undergrad and grad trainees in informatics-type analyses, as well as basic programming (e.g., R, Python; etc.). Identifying and evaluating new technologies for implementation. This will include tools development as well as advising colleagues on new tools to consider for research project design, analysis, application, and reporting. The candidate will be expected to generate preliminary data for grant submissions and help write informatics-related sections in support of grant applications and may perform other duties as assigned

      Key Duties & Responsibilities

      1. Analyzes genomic, transcriptomics, epigenomics, proteomics and other molecular datasets (including single-cell and spatial transcriptomics datasets) in relation to biomedical or biological research.

      2. Obtains and pre-processes data from external resources such as public repositories. Assists in the design and implementation of analysis plans to address scientific objectives.

      3. Collaborates with others in developing and implementing research projects. Prepares figures for publication and helps to write manuscripts.

      4. Develops pipelines following best computational biology practices (e.g: use a workflow management system) to deploy pipelines in a rigorous, scalable, and reproducible manner.

      5. Develops novel data analysis pipelines and workflows to address cutting edge research needs. Performs code review, analysis review, and writes summary reports to collaborators.

      6. Assists with documenting code and prepares grant progress reports. Presents results internally and to collaborators and other groups. Develops training material.

      7. Performs other job duties as required.

      Annual Salary Range: $85,600 - $139,100

      Doctorate degree in a related field OR Master's degree in a related field and two (2) years of related experience OR Bachelor's degree in related field and four (4) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.
