      As a Software Safety Engineer in the Exploration, Research and Technology Office, you will support as the software systems safety assurance function to develop software safety processes, procedures, and requirements tailoring for Deep Space Logistics (DSL) spacecraft. You will ensure the implementation of testing procedures to verify and validate software systems meet all safety, technical, and mission requirements for DSL as a part of the Gateway Program.

      Duties


      • Conduct detailed safety analysis of software systems, including but not limited to hazard analysis, fault-tree analysis, and failure mode and effects analysis to identify and mitigate potential risks in the software design and implementation.
      • Ensure the implementation of testing procedures to verify and validate software systems meet all safety, technical, and mission requirements for the Deep Space Logistics project.
      • Ensure all software development activities meet the NASA Software Engineering Requirements (NPR7150.2) and NASA Software Assurance and Software Safety Standard (NASA-STD-8739.8).
      • Collaborate with systems engineers to help ensure system requirements satisfy all safety and reliability needs.
      • Collaborate with provider software developers, engineering, and Deep Space Logistics project stakeholders to ensure safety requirements are clearly understood and implemented.
      • Continuously identify, assess, and manage Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA) related software assurance risks throughout the software development lifecycle.
      • Prepare safety assessment and present findings to Chief Safety Office and management team.
      • Participate in incident investigations where software anomalies or issues have occurred and review corrective actions adequately prevent reoccurrence.

      Qualifications


      In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

      NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.

      To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level:
      • Preparing software engineering or software assurance engineering requirements tailoring;
      • Determining equivalency of existing processes in meeting contractual statement of work requirements;
      • Developing or reviewing systems hazard analyses and evaluating the impact software has in contributing to or mitigating the hazard.
