      Summary/Objective

      The Conservation Agent Intern will be assigned a Conservation Agent Mentor and will work along-side of Conservation Agents and staff from other MDC branches to develop the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed for them to compete for the Conservation Agent Trainee position and to be successful during the Conservation Agent Training Academy (if hired to attend). The emphasis of this position is on recruitment, career exploration, introducing interns to MDC, and providing the intern with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to compete for the conservation agent trainee position/be successful if selected to attend the Conservation Agent Training Academy. Both college graduates and undergraduate college students are eligible for the program.

      All candidates must be willing to submit to/authorize a complete pre-employment background investigation performed by Protection Branch. The candidates’ personal history and background must not contain anything that would make the candidate ineligible to obtain a Missouri Peace Officer License.

      Essential Job Duties

      Duties will vary based on an assessment of the Conservation Agent Intern’s strengths and growth opportunity areas. The Conservation Agent Intern can expect to assist conservation agents and other department staff with law enforcement functions, fish and wildlife management activities, feral hog elimination efforts, CWD management, and public relations (programs, clinics, social media, exhibits, hunter education classes, etc.). The Conservation Agent Intern will also have the opportunity to participate in professional development training such as leadership development, interview skills, time management, mental/physical health and well-being, and outdoor recreation skills (shooting sports, boating/canoeing/kayaking, birding, camping, wild game cooking, hunting, fishing, trapping, and other natural resource related outdoor recreational activities). Other duties may include but are not limited to: Staffing the Protection booth at the Missouri State Fair and other special events, attending meetings, conducting fish and wildlife surveys, handling nuisance wildlife complaints, draft or review Wildlife Code related content for use on social media and other communication outlets, answer Wildlife Code related questions from the public, and other duties as assigned.

      SPECIAL BENEFIT TO PROGRAM PARTICIPATION

      Conservation agent preparation program participants who successfully complete their individual development plan will automatically advance to the physical fitness testing/second interview portions of the Conservation Agent Trainee hiring process for the selection process nearest to (or during) their participation in the program.

      Education and Experience

      • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher on 4.0 scale is desirable.
      • Undergraduate student at an accredited university/college in good standing.
      • Preference will be given to students who have completed at least 45 credit hours.
      • Applications will be accepted from qualified individuals seeking a degree in any field of study.
      • All candidates must not be currently disqualified from the possession of firearms or ammunition as prescribed by federal and state law.

      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

      • Ability to teach conservation and related subjects to the public.
      • Ability to work varied hours including Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays.
      • Ability to use firearms and pass an annual qualification test using a Department-issued sidearm.
      • Ability to operate a motor vehicle (often with trailer attached) and have or obtain a valid Driver’s License by the date of employment.
      • Work outdoors in extreme hot and cold temperatures.
      • Ability to observe and classify wildlife species, fish species, trees and common insects and identify diseases inherent to trees and insects.
      • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
      • Ability to enforce wildlife laws firmly and tactfully, with respect for the rights of others.
      • Ability to create public awareness of and involvement in fish, forest and wildlife programs and to provide leadership to the public in this activity.
      • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with elected officials, members of the press, educators, community leaders, courts, representatives from related agencies and the general public.
      • Ability to make independent decisions and act decisively on the determined course of action.
      • Ability to work under stress for prolonged periods of time.
      • Ability to utilize and maintain issued equipment.

    Work Environment

    • Frequently work in outdoors in extreme conditions.
    • Frequently work outdoors, often in rugged terrain and inclement weather (typically between zero and ten days per month).
    • Regularly travel in closed vehicle.
    • Working long hours and occasional weekends.

Exemption Status/Special Notes

This position has been determined to be Nonexempt according to the Fair Labor Standards Act. Employees must agree to accept compensatory time in lieu of cash payments in accordance with the Department's Compensatory Time Off and Overtime Policy.
