The ENT Department has 30 whole time equivalent consultants. The appointee will be expected to undertake cross-site working, although mainly based at Heartlands Hospital. Elective theatre sessions will be at Birmingham Heartlands Hospital (BHH). Outpatient clinics are held at BHH & SH sites.
This is a new post, and it is open to those who have a subspecialist training in Paediatric ENT Surgery (Post CCT fellowship training). It will be expected that the appointee can complement the skills and the sub-specialities in the department. The appointee will be expected to support the ENT department by managing referrals to meet the targets. The appointee should be competent in complex Paediatric ENT surgery.
Main duties of the job
There will be the opportunity to develop specialist services such as Paediatric Rhinology, Paediatric Allergy and expand multidisciplinary Paediatric otology service in line with the needs of the department.Applicants must have full GMC Registration, FRCS(ORL-HNS) or equivalent. Candidates must be on the Specialist Register or be within 6 months of their CCT at the time of interview. Candidates must have an advanced Paediatric ENT Fellowship at the time of commencement of the post and previous Consultant experience is desirable.

Applicants are invited for a substantive post as a Consultant ENT Surgeon with specialist interest in paediatric ENT (across sites) and will join a UHB ENT team with the highest standards of clinical care. You will act as part of this multidisciplinary team to deliver Paediatric ENT services for patients covered within UHB ENT services, participating in clinics, theatre, MDT and Advice and Review. Duties will include;
* Outpatient clinic sessions across sites
* Theatre sessions, both Paediatric & Adult.
* Ward rounds
* Specialist clinics- Paediatric allergy/rhinology service, SPOC service.
* Teaching undergraduate and postgraduate

The job plan will include a commitment to clinic, theatre and on call duties. The on-call commitment will be for the BHH admitting site and is currently run as a 1 in 11, supported by a registrar and FY/CT on call. All clinical activities are cancelled when on call. Time will be given for admin and supporting professional activities. The appointee will be expected to attend and contribute to Clinical Governance, teaching and audit within the department. The involvement in continuing medical education is an integral part of the advertised post and as such, you will be required to significantly increase the recruitment to clinical trials and practice evidence-based medicine. Within this role you will be required to participate in all aspects of clinical governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.
The Trust is committed to the development and maintenance of the highest clinical standards through individual appraisal. This will include the audit of personal and clinical practice as well as involvement in departmental and speciality reviews. It will also involve attention to continuing professional development and to meeting requirements for continuing medical education as required by the relevant Royal College. It will also involve the awareness of professional standards and the responsibility to undertake safe and ethical clinical practice and the importance of responding promptly to any circumstances, which may result in increased clinical risk or adverse outcome.
