- Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983)
- MRCPsych or equivalent
- Obtained inclusion on the Specialist Register; or within six months of the award of a Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in General Adult Psychiatry; or eligible for inclusion on the Specialist Register
- Commitment to personal programme of Continuing Professional Development.
- Substantial experience of psychiatry, including working with people suffering from severe mental illness
- Experience of teaching and training at an undergraduate/postgraduate level
- Experience of providing psychological and/or social interventions
- Commitment to clinical audit within multi-disciplinary team.
- Evidence of potential for effective leadership.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work creatively within multi-disciplinary team.
- Demonstrable interest in the provision of gender sensitive mental health service
- Willingness to be involved in management of service.
- Able to participate in Consultant on-call rota.
- Able to travel
- Additional qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or another relevant field
- Broad clinical training including both inpatient and community service
- Experience in working with adults with eating disorders

Job summary
The adult eating disorders service, based at the Barberry, are a well-established team providing inpatients, day treatment and community/outpatients.
We are seeking to appoint a Consultant in Adult Eating Disorders Psychiatry within Birmingham & Solihull to provide assessment and management of patients with eating disorders in the community.
This post has been changed from previous; it used to be a part time post funded by community transformation, but thanks to funding from the West Midlands Adult Eating Disorder Provider Collaborative, it has now been made into a full time post. Community transformation has meant that a number of new post have been created within the team within the last two years, which means that there are exciting opportunities to shape a relatively new team.
There is already an existing full time consultant psychiatrist covering inpatients and the day treatment service. This post would be working in the community and would be leading the intensive outreach arm of the service.
It is expected that this post will involve some travelling to acute hospitals across Birmingham and Solihull, and the hope of building networks across various different specialties e.g. joint working with perinatal and establishing a MEED pathway in the region.
Main duties of the job
The community caseload is around 300, and there are approximately 400 referrals per year. The expectation is that the entire caseload would sit under the community consultant. The anticipated weekly face to face contacts of the community consultant psychiatrist is approximately 4-5 new assessments and 10 follow up appointments per week. The majority of these would take place at The Barberry, but as a lead for the community outreach team, there is an expectation that some will be done as home visits.
The rationale for the creation of the post was to enable the team to meet the key aims of the Birmingham and Solihull eating disorders community transformation, which were as follows:
1. Improve care pathway for adults with eating disorders, including transition between primary, secondary and tertiary care; CAMHS and Adult Services; and services in different geographical areas.
2. Enhance liaison between health care services, social services and VCSE partners to ensure a holistic approach.
3. Expand existing early intervention work for individuals between the ages of 16 and 25.
4. Develop an intensive outreach service for risk management.
5. Reduce unnecessary boundaries across services via digital working pathways.
