      Job summary

      We are excited to invite applications for a Consultant in Anaesthesia and within University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).

      The current opportunity is for consultants to join the dedicated Anaesthetics team based at Birmingham Heartlands, Good Hope and Solihull hospitals.

      We are looking to appoint consultants with an interest in Vascular anaesthesia, Thoracic Anaesthesia, Bariatrics, Colorectal, E.N.T, Urology, Gynaecology, Paediatric day surgery, General surgery, Obstetric anaesthesia , Trauma and Orthopaedics and pain medicine, the on-call commitment will be on the General on call rota on the Heartlands site. The appointee will be expected to participate in the Divisional and Departmental quality improvement projects as well as undergraduate and postgraduate teaching.

      Main duties of the job

      Anaesthetic Department at Heartlands Solihull and Good Hope Hospitals

      We are a large Anaesthetic Department with almost 80 Consultants based over the three main hospital sites and we cover a wide range of subspecialty and complex work and support each other to deliver this. A supportive and positive workplace culture is important to us. We were one of the first departments to introduce a "Learning from Excellence" programme and this is actively used to provide positive feedback to colleagues.

      The core component of this post is to provide anaesthetic cover for a variety of surgical services, if a consultant has a special interest is in Pain medicine, then they will have a split job plan between Pain and Anaesthetics.

      The post holder must understand the significant ongoing changes in the Trust's services and be prepared to take an active part in the change program.

      A standard full time job plan will contain 10 programmed activities which could be filled by a variety of options from currently uncovered lists and flexible cover for consultant leave. A programmed activity will normally have a timetable value of 4 hours, and a full-time consultant will normally devote 8 programmed activities to direct clinical care. The remaining programmed activities will be devoted to supporting professional activities.

      An example 10 PA job plan is indicated in Appendix 1, but the successful candidate will be invited to discuss these options with the Clinical Service Lead on appointment.

      The successful applicant will be expected to participate in all aspects of Clinical Governance as developed by the Trust to monitor, maintain and develop the quality and effectiveness of care.

      The Trust is committed to the development and maintenance of the highest clinical standards through individual appraisal. This will include the audit of personal and clinical practice, as well as involvement in departmental and specialty reviews. It will also involve attention to continuing professional development, to meet the requirements for continuing medical education as expected by the relevant Royal College, and the awareness of professional standards, with the responsibility to undertake safe and ethical clinical practice and the importance of responding promptly to any circumstances which may result in increased clinical risk or adverse outcome.

      Funding is available for approved study leave as defined in the Trust study leave policy. Current entitlements are 10 days of study or professional leave a year and 1,500 study leave budget a year.

      The successful applicant will be expected to participate in the Directorate and Departmental audit and quality improvement programme. In addition, the department is currently engaging with the RCOA Anaesthesia Clinical Services Accreditation and successful candidates are expected to participate in this.

      Quarterly department governance meetings allow for the presentation and discussion of M&M cases, quality improvement projects and updates both as a whole department and in specialty groups.
