- The Oxford Eye Hospital was founded by Robert Doyne in 1886 and remains an internationally recognised centre of excellence for clinical research, particularly in retina and genetics. The Oxford Ophthalmological Congress held annually since 1909, is one of the largest scientific congresses in ophthalmology in Europe and attracts leading speakers across all ophthalmic disciplines.
- The Medical Sciences Division is an internationally recognized centre of excellence for biomedical research and teaching and is the largest of the four academic divisions within the University. Over 5500 academics, researchers, NHS clinicians and GPs, administrative staff, with 1400 graduate and 1600 undergraduate students, together contribute to extensive research, teaching and clinical portfolios. The Medical Sciences Division is amongst the top five biomedical institutions in the world, and has been ranked number one for the last six years in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings for clinical, pre-clinical and health sciences. The university comprises 44 colleges and halls with over 100 libraries. Students number around 22,000 in total, just over half of whom are undergraduates while over 40 per cent are international, representing 140 countries. - Advanced training in paediatric ophthalmology & strabismus surgery
- Experience of leading an team including allied health professionals
- Experience of surgical adult strabismus management
- Ability to self-motivate and be involved in teaching and training
- Ability to work independently
- Ability to effectively organise and manage clinical workload
- Ability to work flexibly and as part of a team
- Demonstrates an ability to undertake effectively the role of consultant in a large teaching hospital.
- Good personal and interpersonal skills
- Ability to communicate effectively through good verbal and written skills
- Evidence of ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels skills should be highly developed.
- Previous publications in clinical research relevant to the post. Understanding of the role of Research and Development in NHS Clinical Governance
- Experience of teaching undergraduates and trainees
- Experience of routine clinical audit
- Full Driving Licence
- NHS and the Government's agenda for its modernisation
- Knowledge of the organisation
- Computer literacy skills
- Experience with patient group communication and lectures
- Experience with advice & guidance to GPs and to community optometrists
- Peer reviewed funding, principal investigator role, clinical trial publications, GCP qualification
- Management training and experience
- Publications in audit

Job summary
CONSULTANT IN PAEDIATRIC OPHTHALMOLOGY
A full time 10 PA post as a substantive Consultant in Paediatric Ophthalmology is available at the Oxford Eye Hospital. The ideal candidate would have post CCT Fellowship in paediatric ophthalmology. Candidates with adult strabismus experience are encouraged to apply. This is a substantive consultant post and the 10 PAs are apportioned 8 PAs for direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs for supporting professional activity with an on-call commitment.

Main duties of the job
We are looking for an enthusiastic Consultant Paediatric Ophthalmologist to join our established team of Consultants and work in the Oxford Eye Hospital.
The Oxford Eye Hospital provides a paediatric ophthalmology services to the Oxfordshire Population as well as tertiary referral work from surrounding regions. The post-holder would be expected to provide a comprehensive paediatric ophthalmology service. The ability to also provide adult strabismus surgery would be desirable.
The paediatric ophthalmology service has a strong multidisciplinary interaction with general paediatric, neurosurgery, neurology and craniofacial departments of the neighbouring Oxford Children's Hospital.
A clinical trials unit is active and research opportunities are available and encouraged. Participation on the consultant on-call rota is mandatory.
The paediatric ophthalmology team consists of a current locum consultant, one paediatric ophthalmology fellow and both optometrists and orthoptists with extended role. Deanery trainees also work in the service.
