      Job summary

      The Respiratory Service at the Trust is looking to recruit a Consultant in Respiratory Medicine. This post presents an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic growing department practicing from a newly built, state of the art 480 bed hospital. You will join the existing 7 Consultants providing respiratory care to our population of 400,000.

      Applications are invited for a substantive full time 10 PA Consultant post in Respiratory Medicine to join our respiratory team at The Great Western Hospital. The post will involve general respiratory inpatient care including our expanded high care units, general respiratory and subspecialty respiratory clinics, participation in the general medical on call rota, bronchoscopy, and respiratory in-reach into Acute Medicine. The successful applicant will be encouraged to develop subspecialty services.

      Specialist interests in some of the following are desirable: asthma, lung cancer, sleep and domiciliary ventilation plus respiratory inpatient care including delivery of respiratory support for our high care units.

      Main duties of the job

      Clinical Duties:

      • Multidisciplinary team working is key component of the working within the Trust and involves regular MDT discussions with colleagues
      • Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
      • Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in your charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care (with secretarial support)
      • Development of sub specialty interests that fit in with Division needs and the strategic direction of the Trust.
      • Responsibilities for carrying out teaching, examination and accreditation duties are required, and for contributing to undergraduate and post-graduate and continuing medical education activity.
      • Provision of cover for Consultant colleagues' periods of leave in accordance with arrangements agreed within Trust policy.
      • Participation in clinical audit and in continuing medical education.
      • Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.
      • The post holder will participate in out of hours consultant cover on a rota compliant with the European Working Time Directive. On-call responsibilities will involve multidisciplinary team working for all acute admissions referred to the unit.
      • Undertaking ward rounds as appropriate.
      • Providing evidence-based care for patients in a multidisciplinary setting.
      • Conducting suitable duties in cases of emergencies and unforeseen circumstances.

Consultants are key members of the Division and are accountable and responsible for leading changes to service that will improve the patient experience.

      • To support the Clinical Lead in policy and strategy development as a senior member of the Division Management Team.
      • To contribute to the leadership and development of Services under the direction of the Clinical Lead and Associate Medical Director and in line with the Trusts business plans.
      • The post holder will ensure effective communication and involvement of staff across the Division including support to the Divisional Director to achieve their objectives.
      • Work in partnership with colleagues in other Divisions within the Trust.
