      Job summary

      We areseeking to appoint Consultant Radiologists to join our friendly and dynamic team at Bolton NHS Foundation Trust.

      Due to the creation of a new Community Diagnostic Centre (CDC) based at the acute site, we are looking to further expand our clinical team. We are happy to consider applications across all subspecialty interests, to help complement our team and grow our services. However, the following subspecialty Radiologists are particularly welcomed: Nuclear Medicine, Paediatric, Breast and Gynaecology. The successful candidates will be based at the Royal Bolton Hospital.

      Applicants must have full registration with the GMC with FRCR (or equivalent) and either be eligible for inclusion on the GMC's Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at the date of interview.

      Main duties of the job

      The general radiology commitment will include plain film reporting, ultrasound, MRI and CT work, which will be timetabled. Subspecialty interests will be accommodated within the job plan. A full-time contract will include 2.5 Programmed Activities (PAs) for Supporting Professional Activities and 1 PA for 7-day working (currently 1 in 16 on-call rota).

      Upon taking up the post, the successful candidate will agree a job plan and work programme; the actual timetable is open to negotiation and will be decided by mutual consent although it will have to dovetail with the other consultants' commitments. The radiologists' rota currently works on a two-weekly cycle. A commitment to working flexibly within the 7-day service will be expected.

      Working in Radiology at Bolton Hospital NHS Foundation Trust:

      RADIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

      Radiology and Breast Imaging forms part of the Diagnostic and Support Services Division alongside Laboratory Medicine, Pharmacy and Outpatient Services. The specialty structure consists of a Clinical Lead (Consultant Radiologist), Operational Business manager and Lead Radiographers/ Sonographers. This structure is reflected at all levels within the organisation. The leadership team functions together as a cohesive unit to set the tone for each specialty and is jointly responsible for quality, performance, finance and workforce.

      We hold Radiology Governance meetings and Radiology Consultants meetings chaired by the Governance and Clinical Lead respectively.

      Job responsibilities

      7 DAY WORKING

      The successful candidate would be expected to participate in the 7-day working rota, which is currently 1 in 16, joining the Registrar rota. Candidates are expected to cover 1 evening every 4 weeks 5pm 7pm and 1 weekend in 16 (Friday 5-7pm, Sat and Sunday 9am-6pm). An outside agency provides an on-call service from 7pm (6pm at weekends). Availability for an on-call service in event of a failure of this outsourced service would be expected or in a Major incident.

      TEACHING

      The successful candidate will be expected to share in the training of the Specialty trainees and clinical fellows in Radiology, including clinical and educational supervisor responsibilities as appropriate. Some teaching of non-radiology junior staff and allied health professionals would be expected.

      CLINICAL MEETINGS

      Attendance at cancer and non-cancer multidisciplinary team meetings as appropriate to specialty and sector MDT meetings will be required.

      CPD / POSTGRADUATE EDUCATION

      The Trust has a very well equipped multidisciplinary Education Centre and all Consultants are eligible for CPD - there is a budget managed by the Director of Medical Education.

      The Education Centre has seminar rooms, discussion rooms and tiered lecture theatre for 120 people and a well-stocked library with access to Medline.

      The Manchester Medical Society radiology section holds 7 academic evening lectures through the academic year in the Manchester Medical School.

      CLINICAL GOVERNANCE AND AUDIT

      The Trust has a Clinical Governance Committee chaired by the Medical Director. The Radiology Directorate has established a Clinical Governance structure. All categories of Directorate Staff are represented in the structure, and there is liaison with other clinical groups where required. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the Directorate Clinical Audit Programme and participate in quality improvement projects, which will be closely linked to the needs of Clinical Governance. The lead radiologist for audit is Dr Yee Mei Koay. Dr Khwaja Khan is lead radiologist for governance in the department and deputy clinical lead.

      RESEARCH

      The Trust has a Research and Development Committee to develop local R&D strategy. An interest in research will be welcomed and Consultants are encouraged to get involved in research and publications. Limited funding for research projects is available from time to time.
