      What you will do

      Controls Engineering Intern responsible for supporting design, development, validation, and support of active magnetic bearing (AMB) control system hardware, firmware, and software.

      This is a 20-40 hour per week position.

      How you will do it:

      Design, develop, and validate new and updated AMB control system hardware, firmware, and or software.

      • Develop schematics
      • Select components
      • Oversee the layout printed circuit (PC) board assemblies
      • Configure and program FPGAs
      • Develop DSP software
      • Develop microcontroller (ARM) software

      Support existing AMB hardware designs

      • Manage, through research and validation, critical component substitutions as they become obsolete or otherwise unavailable
      • Investigate root cause failures for production and fielded components and for for complex PC board assemblies and develop countermeasures
      • Update PC board assemblies to reduce cost and improve reliability and performance
      • Support PCB assembly contract manufacturers via technical consultation and documentation updates

      · Serve as technical interface with third parties:

      • PC board contract manufacturers including automated test development.
      • PC board design and layout services
      • FPGA design services

      What we look for

      Required Qualifications:

      Education

      • Required: Pursuing bachelor's degree in Computer, Electronics, or Electrical Engineering. Rising Senior.
      • Additional education preferred: Pursuing master’s in Computer, Electronics, or Electrical Engineering

      · Experience

      • Coursework or projects involving embedded control system hardware and/or software development experience
      • Hard Skills / Knowledge (Preferred)
      • Development of application-optimized real-time closed-loop control systems including:
      • Critical component selection and high-speed interface design:
      • Required: Microprocessor, DSP, FPGA, memory devices, serial communications (USB, Ethernet), and peripheral interfaces
      • Preferred: Custom SoM (System on Module) specification
      • Firmware design and support:
      • Required: VHDL / Verilog
      • Preferred: Schematic based design utilizing Altium and Xilinx tool sets
      • Specialized knowledge:
      • Data converter optimization (D/A, A/D)
      • Distributed power supply topologies
      • Device-to-device serial interfaces (SPI, I2C, RS485, etc.)
      • PWM control theory
      • High-speed signal and EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility) PC board layout considerations
      • Thermal management design
      • Familiarity with advanced electronic diagnostic and laboratory equipment
      • Programming & diagnostic tools (FPGA, JTAG emulators)
      • High-speed clock domain management
      • Brushless motor commutation theory
      • Eddy current position sensor technology and interface
      • SoC (System on Chip) specifications (e.g., thermal limits) & architecture (e.g., memory controller design, system buses, cache control, processor interlocks, etc.)

      · Soft Skills / Knowledge

      • Troubleshooting: able to investigate root causes and implement countermeasures
      • Prioritization: able to select the next best action from among multiple competing priorities.
      • Self-management: able to complete multiple, complex, interdisciplinary tasks with limited guidance.
      • Communication: able to express ideas and share information clearly and efficiently across the full range of communication modes: in-person meetings, remote conferencing, email, chat, and documents.
      • Collaboration: works well with other members of multidisciplinary teams to accomplish shared objectives.
      • Third party relations: establishes good working relationships with customer and supplier representatives. Supports their technical needs while respecting the bounds of commercial agreements and resource limitations.
