      The Coordinator of School Counseling implements innovative, evidence-based strategic actions to support attainment of the Division's Vision, Mission and Goals for all students. The Coordinator of School Counseling has direct responsibility for building curriculum, assessment, and instructional methods that support the division’s strategic plan. Responsible for maintaining the efficacy of the school counseling program which supports school counselors, schools, and students. By building relationships among school leaders, educational leaders, and central leaders, the Coordinator of School Counseling will facilitate developing expertise in using the Professional Learning Community model, the Performance Appraisal model, and evidence-based practices.


      Essential Functions:
      • Supports school counselors, offering regular guidance, feedback, and professional development opportunities to improve their effectiveness in supporting students;
      • Ensures counselors are equipped to address the diverse needs of students, including academic achievement, personal and social development, and postsecondary planning;
      • Fosters a collaborative environment for counselors to share best practices, strategies, and resources;
      • Provides direct school counseling services to students enrolled through Albemarle County Public Schools in public day, private day, residential and hospital programs;
      • Collects, manages, reports, and completes data entry for students in public day, private day, residential and hospital programs utilizing the existing student information system as well as the Virginia IEP and related PCG modules;
      • Provides consultation and in-service to give counselors, teachers, and administrators in the schools information, strategies, and approaches for maximizing the total development of students to include academic and social needs;
      • Coordinates and facilitates School Counseling Directors Meetings, K-8 Lead School Counseling Meeting, School Counselor Professional Learning Community meeting and related work;
      • Provides overall collaborative coordination of special activities/events involving the school counseling program (i.e. includes but not limited to career fairs, financial aid workshops, parenting workshops, etc.) to ensure equitable division level implementation;
      • Collaborates with the ACE Academy Principal, to host an annual one-day professional learning conference for local and regional educators, showcasing the center's work and pathways & studios;
      • Provides resources, tools, and guidance to school counselors to help students explore and prepare for post-secondary options such as higher education enrollment, employment opportunities, and military enlistment;
      • Serves as the Division connection to the College Board and oversees all initiatives and expectations outlined through this organization;
      • Oversees the administration of standardized tests such as AP exams, PSATs, SATs, etc.;
      • Collaborates with the Coordinator of Mental Health and Wellness to support and monitor the social and emotional learning initiatives and activities within the division;
      • Assists in the management of the homebased / homebound program at the Division level;
      • Coordinates with schools to provide students and families with immediate and long-range educational planning and course selection, as appropriate;
      • Provides leadership and support for student Academic and Career Plan Portfolio development;
      • Monitors and documents school and division progress toward closing opportunity and achievement gaps;
      • Coordinates the scheduling process for students entering sixth through twelfth grade and works closely with high school and middle school principals in the design and implementation of schedules;
      • Coordinates scholarship programs for the division and serve as division contact for scholarship information;
      • Works through the Career Coach to enhance partnerships with community colleges, colleges and universities, to include the expansion of dual enrollment opportunities and the Early College Program in partnership with Piedmont Virginia Community College;
      • Performs related duties, as assigned.
      Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

      Knowledge of best practices in curriculum, assessment, and instruction. Ability to use best practices in counseling, and support / promote the National ASCA Model when working with students and adults. Knowledge of and ability to use best practice supervision skills. Ability to work as a team member to plan, model, and facilitate professional development opportunities.


      Education and Experience:

      Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in School Counseling, or a related educational field, AND a minimum of five years’ relevant instructional experience is required. Must be eligible for or hold a license issued by Virginia Dept. of Education in applicable area; administration endorsement preferred. Prior experience working with children with disabilities in a public, private school or clinical setting, preferred. Experience designing, implementing, and monitoring individual programs to students strongly preferred; experience providing staff development training to classroom personnel preferred.


      Physical Conditions and Nature of Work Contacts:

      Work is typically performed in an office setting primarily. At times this person may set up office equipment and files, with occasional light lifting and other limited physical activities. Occasional operation of automated computer office equipment is required. Frequent travel to school sites throughout the County and occasional statewide or regional travel is required. Attendance to meetings outside the normal duty hours is frequently required. Regular involvement with principals, program administrators, teachers, school counselors, students and families, private day, and residential facilities throughout Virginia and within the School Division. Usually there is a need to motivate, establish rapport, gain support, or persuade or influence individuals or groups. Contacts with School Board members, Advisory Councils, faculties and students, parents, and the general public are regularly required. Occasional debate is often characteristic of the contact and may require considerable skill in diplomacy, tact, and discretion.
