- Coordinates with the local school and central administrative teams to assure that local school personnel maintain accurate student records to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and Board of Education policies
- Participates in the supervision of curriculum and instruction for students with disabilities to ensure Federal, State, and local Board of Education standards are being met
- Coordinates all instructional aspects of curriculum/instruction for students with disabilities at the school level according to Federal, State, and local Board regulations and established policies
- Makes recommendations for and participates in the Department’s budget process
- Promotes communication and professional growth through local school visits, in-service meetings, and professional learning opportunities
- Participates in the development, coordination, and implementation of in-service and staff development training for administrative staff, teachers and support staff and parents
- Assists in organizing and conducting training and professional learning for teachers, staff, instructional support teachers, and administrators as determined by need
- Participates with administrative teams to develop and implement the strategic plan including identifying appropriate initiatives, setting benchmarks, and data collection
- Works with special education lead teachers (SELTs), school-based special education teachers/service providers, and administrators to determine needs of students with disabilities to implement the goals/objectives of students’ IEPs
- Assists in conducting program evaluation in schools and in making recommendations for program improvement
- Assists in the coordination of mediations, early resolution sessions, and hearings
- Assists in the development, implementation, and supervision of programs for children with disabilities, including related services
- Serves as a team member during the pre-referral, eligibility, and IEP processes
- Participates as the team representative in staffings held for students served through agencies outside system
- Assists special education teachers in developing and implementing appropriate and effective Individualized Education Plans
- Assists all teachers and administrators in developing and implementing strategies and modifications to support best practices for inclusive education
- Assists teachers and administrators in developing effective teaching practices
- Assists the director in evaluating personnel who serve students in special education
- Remains aware of current trends and issues in (special) education
- Works with Human Resources to assist schools in personnel allocation and in hiring appropriate personnel
- Represents the Department on committees as assigned by the Director/Chief
- Completes Federal, State, Local reports as assigned in an accurate and timely manner
- Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator
- Knowledge of the policies and regulations of the City Schools of Decatur Board of Education as well as State and Federal rules and regulations related to Special Education
- Ability to supervise and work effectively with departmental personnel
- Good decision-making and problem solving skills
- Ability to develop implement, monitor, and evaluate program goals and initiatives
- Working knowledge of standards-based instruction and assessment
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Excellent organizational and leadership skills
- Master of Special Education degree or related field such as Master of Speech and Language Pathology
- Minimum of five years of special education classroom experience
- Minimum of 2 years supervisory experience of staff or programming
- Leadership experience as special education lead teacher at the school or district level
- Must hold or be eligible for Georgia Teaching Certification in special education
- Leadership Certification or Degree, strongly preferred
- Five years+ of special education classroom experience
- Three years of leadership experience at the school and district level

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: The Board of Education, upon recommendation of the Superintendent of Schools, shall appoint the Coordinator of Special Education. The annual period of service for the Coordinator of Special Education shall be 225 days.
PRIMARY FUNCTION: Provides leadership and coordination for planning, implementation, and assessment of the Special Education Department. Ensures compliance with all State and Federal Laws, Georgia State Department of Education Rules and Regulations, and City Schools of Decatur policies and procedures, where applicable.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises SELTs, therapists, and Student Engagement Coach(es). Manages day-to-day tasks through indirect reporting relationships and a matrix management approach. Interacts with students and parents both directly and indirectly.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: To perform the duties of this job, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, or hear. Lifting up to 30 pounds may be required on an occasional basis. Most often a normal office environment with routine physical activity associated with a normal office environment. However, when and if interacting with students, the employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
