      Salary - Scale 5 - SO1 - £29,109 - £37,692

      Location York (Fulford Road) / Northallerton Coroners Court.

      As a Coroners Officer you will work in an investigative capacity under the judicial direction of a Coroner. You will be required to work within statutory frameworks, national and local policy and procedural guidelines to provide the Coroner with sufficient evidence and information to fulfil their judicial function. You will be required to work under your own initiative to make relevant enquiries into the circumstances of deaths of unknown cause, violence or trauma and those that have occurred in state detention.

      Main duties of the job

      You will need to apply methodical and detailed questioning, investigative procedures and fundamental medical knowledge to produce the required report for the Coroner. Alongside this investigative work you will be the point of contact for bereaved families, building an empathic and ethical relationship with them at one of the most distressing times of their lives. You will be required to keep them informed and provide updates to ensure that they understand the work of the Coroner and the progress of the investigation.

      You will be required to work with a significant number of external professionals such as Doctors and paramedics, legal teams, mortuaries and undertakers and to employ robust case management skills to complete the investigation in a timely manner whilst ensuring the thoroughness of the evidence.

      This crucial role is challenging and rewarding in equal measure. All those who work within the Coroners Service work within an electronic case management system and this role is paper free. IT skills and the ability to enter accurate data quickly and follow an essential and statutory process is a key and fundamental part of this role.

      Place of Work / Hours

      Initially, your place of work will be York Fulford Road Police station and will require daily attendance until you can work without full supervision. Once deemed competent you may be able to work in a hybrid style. Travel will be required to attend team meetings and team training, and you will be required to attend at a mortuary or Coroners court. This role has a career progression plan.

      Occasionally you may be required to work outside of standard hours to deal with faith deaths, organ donation and suspicious deaths. Time off in Lieu will be awarded to compensate for this.

      Please note, the Coroners Officers are currently employed by North Yorkshire Police. Consultation is currently underway with the Local Authority to transfer the role over to North Yorkshire County Council and therefore they may not be based within York after transfer.
