- Secures the public entrances to the Detention Center.
- Observes and monitors the entrance and exit of building visitors.
- Directs building visitors and answers inquiries from the public.
- Operates x-ray machines, metal detection devices, searches pocketbooks, briefcases, packages and other personal belongings of building visitors.
- Confiscates weapons and contraband entering the building.
- Monitors the reception and visiting areas of correctional facilities.
- Receives, screens, routes, and responds to telephone calls at the facility.
- Verifies the credentials of visitors.
- Instructs the public regarding visiting rules and regulations.
- Operates security doors to regulate the flow of visitors.
- Sequesters and stores weapons of those visiting with inmates.
- Patrols detention center buildings and grounds, safeguarding against disturbances, vandalism, fire, and theft.
- Checks for mechanical equipment malfunctions and other maintenance problems.
- Maintains records of patrol activities and enters patrol times at key stations.
- Answers and directs telephone calls.
- Provides information to the public regarding rules, regulations, and policies.
- Informs building occupants that they have a visitor.
- Observes and reports suspicious activities.
- Secures the building by locking doors and windows.
- Monitors and responds to security system alarms.
- Observes surveillance camera monitors.
- Creates and issues visitors passes.
- Receives, sorts, routes, and inspects mail and packages.
- Evacuates buildings during bomb threats, fire alarms, and other emergencies.

Regular Schedule: 37.5 hours per week
A non-merit vacancy exists in the Department of Corrections.
Non-Merit positions are not classified within the Baltimore County Government Classification and Compensation Plan.

Job Purpose
Under general supervision, maintains order and protects property, buildings, grounds, and facilities in the public areas of the Detention Center.
Essential Job Duties
Raises, lowers, and folds flags daily. May supervise parole and probation intake. Performs other related duties as required.

(Experience as a security officer may be substituted on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of four years for the required education.)
Character Requirement
Persons appointed to this classification must be of good moral character and emotionally stable as determined by a comprehensive background investigation and a drug test.
EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
Applicants will be qualified based on an evaluation of their training and experience, as stated on their application, which includes answers to the supplemental questions. Applicants must state the dates and duties of past and present experience clearly and completely for evaluation purposes.Persons appointed to this classification may work on either a rotating or fixed shift basis, which will include nights, weekends, holidays, required and mandated overtime when scheduled.
Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification entails frequent walking and standing and the operation of office equipment. Some work requires exposure to potentially hazardous conditions such as adverse weather and violent people.
