      The Bureau of Human Resources is accepting applications from current Maine Department of Corrections employees to establish a register to fill a vacancy located at the Maine State Prison facility in Warren, Maine.

      This position is responsible for managing, planning, developing, coordinating, evaluating, and implementing the Agriculture/Building Trades Program at Maine State Prison. Responsibilities include overseeing Maine State Prison's agriculture/crops/livestock and building trade programs. Developing and administering a food processing program and developing and implementing policies to increase awareness of agriculture within Maine State Prison. This helps to address and strategize food insecurity issues and skills of our residents now and after release.

      JOB DESCRIPTION

      This is structure and craft work of a supervisory nature in directing and overseeing a correctional trades on-the-job training program at a correctional facility. Work includes coordinating and overseeing staff, teaching resident workers, inspecting work, and submitting progress reports. Work is performed under limited supervision.

      Typical Duties

      • Coordinates and directs the operation of a correctional trades on-the-job training program in order to teach residents a trade and complete projects at a correctional facility.
      • Estimates and orders materials needed in order to complete the project.
      • Coordinates and directs grounds maintenance activities of the institution in order to maintain an effective maintenance program.
      • Oversees and directs the operation of the garage and the maintenance of the motor vehicle fleet in order to ensure the safety and availability of motor vehicles.

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

      • Knowledge of correctional trades program goals and objectives.
      • Knowledge of accepted principles, practices, techniques, and materials used in the specified trade
      • Knowledge of correctional security procedures.
      • Knowledge of grounds maintenance.
      • Ability to plan and layout construction projects.
      • Ability to plan, assign, and evaluate the work of subordinate workers
      • Ability to estimate material costs for construction projects.
      • Ability to write short descriptive reports

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

      Four (4) years of education, training, and/or experience in the specified trade, including one (1) year of experience supervising the work of tradespeople.

      Licensing Requirement: Some positions may require special licenses/certifications in the specified trade.
