Performs all activities required of lower-grade Corrosion Control employees.
Performs appropriate corrosion surveys to evaluate, obtain, and restore cathodic protection levels on company facilities.
Performs stray current (AC and DC) analysis and mitigation.
Conducts field investigations of initial protection candidates.
Performs evaluations of atmospheric corrosion.
Perform pipeline examinations and instruct construction crews on the installation of Cathodic Protection facilities such as anodes, test stations, and permanent reference cells as needed.
Makes recommendations and approves designs for planned construction and maintenance work on new and existing facilities to assure regulatory compliance using established procedures and criteria.
Assures Cathodic Protection has been verified and documented on new installations.
Revises existing Cathodic Protection systems as required.
Uses independent judgment to resolve technical field issues.
Monitors, troubleshoots, and repairs/replaces impressed current rectifier systems.
Mentors, trains, and provides oversight to lower-grade team members.
Operates equipment to diagnose and remediate water outage problems (Hygrometers, pipeline cameras, main tapping, etc.).
Conduct pipeline integrity functions as needed and make recommendations based on findings.
Analyzes corrosion leak data to assess potential risks on Company pipeline facilities.
Provides expertise to the Damage Prevention group in resolving locating issues.
Locates and tests for the presence of gas leakage as appropriate.
Responds and assists during emergencies.
Performs, as directed, other duties as assigned.
May be assigned to related business support and administrative activities (ex. backend meter processing, backend corrosion processing, backend leak/damage prevention processing, peer safety observations, vehicle clean-out, cross-functional training activities, etc.)
High School diploma or equivalent GED is required.
Three (3) years of experience as a Corrosion Control Technician I or equivalent experience required.
Must successfully pass the Corrosion Control Technician II Qualification School, all required Operation Qualification exams, all review schools, and field clearances.
Attend classes for and successfully pass exams for the “Basic, Intermediate, and Advanced Level Courses at the AUCSC” (Appalachian Underground Corrosion Short Course) or equivalent.
Successfully pass a formal, lab-based Rectifier Training and Maintenance school, such as one provided by J. A. Electronics, or equivalent.
Basic computer skills required.
Job Description
Position Summary
As a dedicated Corrosion Control Technician within our dynamic team, you will play a vital role in ensuring compliance with DOT 192 Subpart I – Requirements for Corrosion Control. Employing independent judgment, you will conduct diverse remedial surveys to troubleshoot and propose effective actions, restoring cathodic protection levels for our pipeline facilities. Your responsibilities encompass Cathodic Protection work at Washington Gas Plants, Gates, and the Hampshire Gas Systems, including the evaluation and mitigation of stray currents (AC and DC). Additionally, you will oversee rectifier monitoring, troubleshooting, and repair, providing essential locating services. You will also support activities related to drip surveys, water outages, gas emergency response, and construction activities for corrosion control. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to the growth of the team by mentoring, training, and providing oversight to lower-grade employees, all while safely operating company vehicles.
This is a unionized position under the Local 96 Washington Gas Union. This position serves as a progressive gateway to the role of Sr. Corrosion Control Technician – Grade 8.
