Job Description

- Meet with students to identify and assess student needs and risks, as well as identify, assess, develop, and implement effective wellness plans, working within policies, procedures, practices, and guidelines that apply to services for students;
- Provide short-term counselling including cognitive behavioural therapy, dialectical behaviour therapy, trauma-informed, cross-cultural counselling, Positive Psychology interventions, as well as other treatment modalities, to individuals and couples;
- Provide short-term consultation and support to students with situational and transient or crisis-situational issues and longer-term counselling interventions to students experiencing complex mental health difficulties;
- Provide counselling to students who are assessed as having problems that are more incapacitating (e.g trauma);
- Assess, prepare, and conduct counselling, psychoeducational and psychotherapeutic sessions and groups for students and other Brock stakeholders;
- Provide comprehensive care, life and learning skills to students and their families, as permitted within confidentiality and privacy requirements;
- Respond to crises, provide phone crisis response (as required), and assess, assist, and monitor students identified as being at risk and make timely referrals to the Students at Risk (SAR) team;
- Liaise with faculty, staff, and student groups on campus relating to student mental health, psychological well-being and student behaviour to promote services and ensure a high level of awareness of services provided;
- Consult with student wellness professionals, staff, and faculty regarding issues negatively impacting student academic functioning as well as all other issues, ensuring collaboration and coordination of services;
- Participate on committees to assist with developing a culture of student care on campus and develop and deliver special programs, training, and workshops to meet the needs of particular groups of students, faculty/staff working with students, or community partners;
- Assist students with appropriate academic documentation and support and track the status and progress of students with complex mental health needs, students deemed to be at risk by the SAR team, and students with other vulnerabilities who require close follow-up;
- Evaluate outcomes and maintain statistics concerning student interventions and community education on student mental health issues;
- Maintain clear and concise documentation of treatment efforts and keep communications/documentation private and confidential;
- Master of Social Work or Master of Counselling Psychology degree; Certification, in good standing, with relevant designated professional college;
- 5+ years of experience providing counselling services, preferably with young adults in a post-secondary setting;
- Vulnerable Sector Police Check Clearance;
- Highly developed counselling skills (with a sound theoretical base), primary case management skills, and assessment skills;
- Demonstrated range, depth and flexibility in responding to student needs for counselling using excellent crisis intervention skills, clinical assessment skills, and verbal, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills;
- Applied knowledge in carrying out recommendations from assessments and medical reports, providing comprehensive care, life and learning skills;
- Demonstrated experience working collaboratively within multidisciplinary teams and with community partners;
- Knowledge of issues relevant to the young adult population, combined with a genuine interest in the population, as well as knowledge of relevant legislation in the field (counselling or social work);
- Knowledge of community resources and services, social and environmental determinants of health, health promotion, rehabilitative, and support services, including understanding of the broader mental health system, including emergency mental health services, procedures, and legislation;
- Group therapy skills including knowledge of group process and therapeutic issues, demonstrating confidentiality;
- Familiarity with current research and literature related to effective interventions for a variety of behavioral, emotional, and cognitive difficulties; knowledge of mental health terminology, including diagnostic categories;
- Solid computer competency including word processing, spreadsheet, database, web applications, Outlook, PowerPoint, Workday, and scheduling/appointments systems;
- Knowledge of records management and privacy requirements (FIPPA, PHIPA) and best practices;
- Strong counselling skills with the ability to effectively provide interventions to a diverse student population, including students experiencing complex mental health difficulties;
- Ability to accurately assess a critical situation and respond effectively; Skilled in evaluating student needs and risks and determining the most appropriate intervention and ability to assess and analyze information from a variety of sources;
- Ability to coordinate and plan related activities and timelines and ability to make appropriate and timely referrals;
- Ability to develop special programs for targeted populations; Demonstrated critical thinking skills and takes initiative to improve processes and/or services;
- Flexible and adaptable to changing requirements and circumstances.
- Ability to administer and interpret academic and mental health testing measures to assess for academic strengths and weaknesses and mental health functioning;
- Experience or training in providing Cognitive Behavioral Therapy;
- Demonstrated success in building rapport and trust with racialized populations seeking mental health services;
- Experience supervising Master’s level counselling/psychotherapy students.
- Job Grade L $62,650-$107,280 per annum;*
- Target Hiring Range: $62,650-$68,000
- This position includes full comprehensive benefits and tuition waiver.
