      The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) seeks a COUNSELOR STUDENT III Under general supervision, provides guidance and advice to students on such matters as course selection, course prerequisites, career planning, and continuing higher education. Provides other counseling services regarding student academics or other aspects of student life to students and potential students. May act as a lead counselor for the school and provide training to other student counselor positions. Assumes lead role in student recruitment/retention with designated student population. Acts as a liaison to the Assistant Dean and Sr. Associate Dean in student grievance matters and assists in determining appropriate advising levels. Maintains accurate client information and adheres to the strict confidentiality standards. Provides new student orientation and outreach services as requested. May represent the School of Nursing when in contact with faculty, administrators, staff, and the community. This individual will report to the Director of Student Engagement, Recruitment and Scholarships and to the Assistant Dean of Student Success. The Office of Student Success reports to the Sr. Associate Dean for Academic Success.
      RESPONSIBILITIES:
      Provides personal counseling, information and guidance concerning selection of course prerequisites, degree requirements, curriculum planning and career opportunities. Acts as a liaison to the Director/Assistant Dean in student grievance matters. Clarifies problem areas with clients and establishes action steps to alleviate these problems. Maintains department competitiveness and proficiency through monitoring publications, attending meetings and conferences, serving as liaison with internal and external organizations. Provides student information to various departments and scholarship sponsors. Prepares a variety of special and recurring analyses and reports depicting status of students and other information as requested. Assumes lead role in student recruitment and retention. Plans various seminars/workshops as needed or requested. Verifies eligibility and assists students in nursing school application process Maintains accurate student information and adheres to the strict confidentiality standards as outlined in the American Counseling Association Ethical Code. Act in a caring and courteous manner toward all users in the following ways: use positive interpersonal skills to alleviate concerns and frustrations of students, other staff, and faculty; to provide assistance in a timely manner, reference appropriate procedures in calm and courteous manner; acts always in a professional and confidential manner with respect to all information and records. In coordination with the SON Data Analyst/Registrar, provide data and information in regards to undergraduate program and recruiting for recurring and non-recurring reports as necessary for the business of the SON. Ethical conduct is a fundamental expectation for every UAB community member. All employees must abide by the standards of behavior outlined in the UAB Enterprise Code of Conduct. Upon hire, new employees are required to attest to the Code by completing the online training that is assigned to them. Behaviors inconsistent with the Code may result in appropriate consequences. Performs other related duties as directed to support the missions of the School of Nursing.
      (Annual Salary: $41,175 - $66,915)

      Master's degree in Counseling or field related and three (3) years of related experience required. Work experience may NOT substitute for education requirement.

      To be successful in this role, the individual should possess highly developed written and verbal communication skills along with well developed interpersonal skills to be able to counsel, encourage and persuade students and potential students. Strong problem solving, time management, and organizational skills are crucial to this role. This individual must adhere to all FERPA, HIPAA, and donor/alumni confidentiality standards and be willing to contribute and subscribe to the mission of the School of Nursing at The University of Alabama at Birmingham and be willing to contribute.
