      Brunswick County is seeking a County Attorney to provide a full range of legal services including serving as legal counsel for the County, advising officials, boards and departments on legal matters, and representing the County in civil and administrative litigation. Work includes extensive responsibility in litigation and dispute resolution, as well as ensuring preventive approaches are in the best interest of the County. Additional responsibilities include performing legal research, commercial contract drafting and review, property transactions, and ordinance drafting. The County Attorney supervises all staff in the Legal Department and is appointed by the Board of Commissioners and serves at the pleasure of the Board.Doctoral degree from an accredited school of law and six (6) to nine (9) years of progressively responsible experience in the practice of law, including legal work in local government; or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities. Must be licensed to practice law in North Carolina.

      The County Attorney must also possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
      • Considerable knowledge of case, statutory, regulatory and common law, including but limited to GS 153-A, 40-A, 108 Local Government Commission Act, 160-D Local Planning and Development Regulation, GS 105 Machinery Act of NC, GS 126 Personnel Act, Environmental and Natural Resources laws, Elections laws, and State and Federal Constitutional law.
      • Considerable knowledge of judicial and quasi-judicial procedures and the rules of evidence.
      • Knowledge of utilities as a public enterprise of local government.
      • Ability to conduct civil or criminal litigation.
      • Ability to interpret and apply constitutional provisions, statutes, administrative regulations, court decisions, and other precedents.
      • Ability to research and analyze facts, evidence, and legal instruments.
      • Ability to express conclusion and arguments clearly and logically in oral and written forms.
      • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with Board officials, County Manager, department heads, judges, other attorneys, and other employees.
      • Ability to exercise sound judgment.
      Must be physically able to operate standard office equipment. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force to move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time.
