      As a member of the Operations Control Support team, the CPM (Computational Pipeline Modeling) Engineer contributes to Magellan’s commitment to safe, efficient, 24/7 operations by maintaining a state-of-the-art computer-based transient model leak detection and CPM systems and pipeline simulation systems for liquid petroleum pipelines. The CPM Engineer provides real-time support to Operations Control, maintains and updates the CPM Systems, and evaluates and implements enhancements to the CPM Systems. This role requires an ability to manage multiple projects of varying timelines, while also providing operations support.

      CPM Engineers apply fundamental engineering principles and experience to improve operational safety, solve real-time problems, reduce operations upsets, increase efficiency, etc. They are expected to understand complex issues/problems/situations, determine solutions/paths forward, and present information to decision makers or make a decision themselves.

      A successful candidate will work closely with multi-discipline teams made up of Project Managers, Controls Technology Engineers, other CPM Engineers, Controllers, SCADA Analysts, etc., to complete projects. In this role the engineer may work on multiple engineering projects with competing priorities and occasionally be required to achieve tight project deliverable schedules.

      Responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:

      • Actively engage with the CPM team to provide 24/7 control room support, including being a part of the on-call support rotation
      • Provide analysis of the leak detection system to Operations Control
      • Review and interpret real-time data and use it to make recommendations about pipeline operation
      • Interact with controllers and be able to explain concepts of hydraulics in practical terms
      • Work with the Information Technology group to maintain a robust network system to provide uninterrupted leak detection and batch tracking
      • Troubleshoot and resolve abnormal operating conditions related to leak detection
      • Work with project managers and other engineers to ensure that future projects contain the necessary equipment and instrumentation to achieve leak detection goals
      • Responsible for the design, implementation and maintenance of pipeline leak detection systems including real-time transient models
      • Troubleshoot existing leak detection software configuration for performance, reliability, and operability
      • Manage the design of new CPM systems for new pipeline projects
      • Provide technical representation for project development activities
      • Design and configure software to support new functionality
      • Lead efforts in the improvement of leak detectability and model performance
      • Apply sound engineering principles to make recommendations for additional instrumentation to achieve improved leak detectability
      • Develop custom applications using Python, VBA, DOS batch file, and/or Powershell
      • Develop improvements to CPM systems User Interface to ensure user needs are met, support decision making, and improve user productivity
      • Improve collection and reporting of CPM data to allow groups such as Business Optimization to capitalizing on valuable operations data
      • Work with Business Optimization team to develop operational recommendations and applications to reduce operations costs and improve operations reliability and efficiency
      • Develop and recommend projects to improve the reliability, sensitivity, accuracy, etc., of leak detection systems
      • Interface with Pipeline Control Center, field operations, engineering, and project managers in efforts to support and optimize the leak detection system performance
      • Develop, maintain, and update technical practices related to leak detection and pipeline hydraulics
      • Develop, own, and drive the leak detection program and function as the technical authority / subject matter expert
      • Develop and perform acceptance testing of vendor-supplied software updates
      • Ensure Operational Excellence in Safety, Environmental, and Regulatory Compliance by understanding and applying compliance standards for pipeline operations
      • Perform periodic monitoring of all leak detection system alarms
      • Develop knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to pipeline CPM systems
      • Contribute to the development of recommended leak detection sensitivity targets
      • Develop leak detection software functional and technical design specifications

      Minimum Education Requirements:

      • B.S. in Engineering

      Preferred Skills and Experience:

      • 4+ years of CPM (Leak Detection) experience
      • Experience with Python, JAVA, PowerShell
      • Aptitude in hydraulics, leak detection technologies, statistical analysis, measurement/instrumentation, and/or SCADA
