      The BC Prosecution Service (BCPS) contributes to the protection of society by approving charges and conducting prosecutions and appeals before the Provincial, Supreme, and Appeal Courts of British Columbia and the Supreme Court of Canada. The BCPS also provides legal advice to government and police on criminal law matters, develops policies and procedures on issues relating to the administration of criminal justice, and liaises with the media and members of the public on all matters respecting the work of the BCPS. The Assistant Deputy Attorney General is responsible for the administration of the BCPS, which is divided into Headquarters, Criminal Appeals and Special Prosecutions (CASP) and five regions, each of which is headed by a Regional Crown Counsel.

      As Crown Counsel, you are responsible for independently, effectively, and fairly approving charges and prosecuting offences under the Criminal Code, provincial statutes and regulations, and federal statutes, as assigned, in accordance with BC Prosecution Service policies and the Crown Counsel Act.

      Job Requirements:

      In order to be considered for this position, your application must clearly demonstrate how you meet the education and experience as outlined below:

      • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or from another Canadian Law Society with the ability to transfer or qualify in British Columbia OR immediately eligible for call to the Bar within 90 days of the closing date of the competition.
      • Juris Doctor or Bachelor of Laws Degree from an accredited common law school.
      • Crown Counsel Level 1: Counsel up to five years of call, with recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada in the area of criminal law or reasonably comparable quasi-criminal law.
      • Crown Counsel Level 2: Counsel in their 6th to 11th year of call, with recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada in the area of criminal law or reasonably comparable quasi-criminal law.
      • Recent experience as a practicing lawyer in Canada in criminal law or reasonably comparable quasi-criminal law.

      • Preference may be given to applicants working as Crown Counsel with the BC Prosecution Service
      • Preference may be given to applicants who have experience using the JUSTIN database system

      Provisos:
      • Travel is a requirement of this position.
      • The BC Prosecution Service is responsible for staffing and meeting court requirements for the conduct of weekend and evening bail proceedings through a Comprehensive Bail Program, to which Crown Counsel may with notice, be assigned, subject to operational requirements.

      Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work from home a few days a week subject to an approved telework agreement.
