      GENERAL SUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Police Captain, the Crime Analyst is responsible for collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data related to criminal activity to support law enforcement operations and enhance public safety. The analyst will work closely with law enforcement personnel to identify trends, patterns, and potential areas of concern within the community.

      • Collects data through means such as analyzing results or by setting up and managing new studies
      • Transfers data into a new format to make it more appropriate for analysis
      • Builds tools to automate data collection
      • Searches through large data sets for usable information
      • Creating reports and presentations for uses
      • Correlates similar data to find actionable results
      • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with City employees, municipal officials, commissions, committees, business and community groups, developers, investors, builders, other city, county, state and federal department/agencies, representatives of the media and the general public, as needed to develop data capture.
      • Clean, aggregate, disaggregate, and organize data from disparate sources and transfer it to data warehouses.
      • Utilizes geospatial data to produce comprehensive views of service impacts.
      • Presents data in a thoughtful way to stakeholders.
      • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

      KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
      Data Collection and Analysis: Gather and analyze crime data from various sources including police reports, open records, and crime databases.
      Statistical analysis: Identify patterns in data. This includes having a keen sense of pattern detection and anomaly detection.
      Research: Stay updated on criminal trends, emerging threats, and best practices in crime analysis.
      Computer science: Apply the principles of artificial intelligence, database systems, human/computer interaction, numerical analysis, and software engineering.
      Data storytelling: Communicate actionable insights using data, often for a non-technical audienceMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
      • Associate’s degree in criminal justice, computer science, sociology, statistics, or related field.
      • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the essential knowledge, skills and abilities.

      PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
      • Bachelor’s degree in a data related field
      • Previous experience in crime analysis, data analysis, or a related field is highly desirable.

      WORKING AND PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:
      • Extensive periods of sitting
      • Occasional periods of field environments; travel from site to site • Constant hearing, near sight acuity, concentration, and judgment
      • Frequent handling, talking, depth perception, color vision, and writing ability
