- Collect and analyze data from various sources, including crime reports, intelligence databases, and open-source information.
- Identify patterns, trends, and correlations in criminal activity to support investigations and strategic planning.
- Prepare detailed analytical reports, charts, and presentations for law enforcement officials and stakeholders.
- Assist in the development of threat assessments and risk analyses.
- Collaborate with other law enforcement agencies, analysts, and intelligence units to share information and enhance criminal investigations.
- Utilize analytical software and tools to process and visualize data.
- Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of crime reduction strategies and provide recommendations for improvements.
- Maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information and ensure compliance with legal and ethical standards.
- Stay updated on the latest trends and developments in criminal analysis and law enforcement practices.
- Learn and become efficient with the City of Dubuque Public Safety camera system.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Preferred: Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Criminology, Sociology, Statistics, or a related field.
- Experience: Previous experience in law enforcement, criminal analysis, or intelligence analysis is highly desirable.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills.
- Proficiency in using analytical software and tools (e.g., GIS, crime mapping software, data visualization tools).
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of criminal justice system and law enforcement procedures.
- Office-based environment with occasional fieldwork or travel.
- Flexible hours, however, may require working irregular hours, including nights and weekends, depending on case demands. This position does not have a work from home option.
The Crime Analyst Intern is available to qualified undergraduate or graduate student (criminal justice, psychology, sociology, or other related field) with an interest in learning about the police department and crime patterns and trends. You must have intermediate level of computer knowledge and experience, ability to utilize word processing and data entry programs, and positive and supportive attitude with people of all backgrounds and abilities to be considered for this position. As an intern, you will assist with collecting criminal intelligence data, assist with analysis of crime data as it pertains to patterns/trends, and assist Crime Analyst in distribution of relevant, timely criminal intelligence.
