      The City of Walnut Creek is seeking to fill the new position of Crime Prevention Specialist. This position will be part of the Support Services Division of the Police Department.

      Salary

      The salary range for a Crime Prevention Specialist is $76,221.86 to $92,648.14, annually.

      About the Position

      The Crime Prevention Specialist supports the Police Department by implementing crime prevention programs and raising crime awareness through education and outreach. They plan and coordinate activities like National Night Out, neighborhood watch meetings, and crime-free programs for the residential and business communities.

      This role involves assisting with Police Department outreach, community meetings, and developing inclusive crime prevention strategies. The specialist tracks and evaluates crime prevention efforts, monitors legal and best practice changes, and supports policy development. Additionally, they prepare outreach materials, deliver presentations throughout the local community on crime prevention topics, and strengthen relationships between the community, Police Department, and City staff to address crime effectively.

      The Ideal Candidate

      The ideal candidate is an organized self-starter with strong communication and writing skills and has familiarity with municipal codes and permitting processes. They should have experience building relationships in the community and be comfortable working with diverse groups of people. As a proactive problem-solver, the ideal candidate will be able to stay updated on local trends and deliver clear presentations.

      Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

      • Knowledge of modern crime prevention and crime awareness methods.
      • Knowledge of effective technical and administrative report preparation and presentation, and ability to create and deliver professional presentations.
      • Knowledge of techniques for effectively representing the City when interacting with the public, government agencies, community groups, and other professional organizations.
      • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with others.
      • Ability to interact with the general public during day-to-day work and project a positive attitude toward serving the public (including effectively handling irate citizens using appropriate language, voice control, knowledge of the law, and common sense).
      • Ability to effectively utilize Microsoft Office, specialized software applications, and other technology related to the work.

      Qualifications Guidelines

      Graduation from high school, and two (2) years of responsible experience performing crime prevention, law enforcement, police support, or public outreach duties in a law enforcement agency. Any equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.

      Course work in crime prevention, criminal justice, law enforcement administration, or related field is desirable.

      Special Requirements

      • Possession of, or ability to obtain prior to employment, a valid Class C California Driver’s License and a good driving record.
      • Ability to successfully complete a background check and maintain any required security clearances.
      • Employee may be required to work on-call, extended/off hours, and weekends.

      Applicants possessing the MOST DESIRABLE qualifications will be invited to continue in the selection process, which will include an oral interview tentatively scheduled for Thursday, February 6, 2025. A practical examination may also be included in this process. Successful candidates will be placed on an Eligible List, from which top qualifying candidates will be considered by the Police Department for hire. Follow-up department interviews are tentatively scheduled for Thursday, February 13, 2025.
