- Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a Physical Science, Forensic Science or closely related field; or combination of education and experience (evaluated on a case by case basis)
- Valid Florida Driver’s License
- Computer literate
- Type 25 WPM accurately
- Knowledge of and proficiency in:
- Industry standards
- Principles of physical evidence, recognition, collection, interpretation and preservation
- Laws, regulations and statutes related to the responsibilities of the position
- Respond to various types of crime scenes, to include but not limited to homicide, suicide, suspicious death, infant death, battery, arson, traffic homicide, robbery, burglary, child abuse, elder abuse, and sexual battery
- Maintain and preserve chain-of-custody of evidence
- Maintain processing and dry room integrity and security
- Perform duties at crime scenes which will include the collection, examination, preservation, documentation, preparation and/or analysis for the presence of physical evidence
- Utilize physical and chemical techniques for the recovery of latent prints from a variety of surfaces
- Utilize a variety of techniques, including mechanical and chemical, for the recovery of forensic evidence which will include, but is not limited to, shoe and tire impressions, biological evidence, trace evidence, firearms, etc.
- Prepare accurate reports of crime scenes and evidence processing
- Examine bodies of deceased; to include but not limited to attending autopsies, taking photographs, and collecting fingerprints, swabs, trace evidence, clothing, and other items from deceased
- Utilize measuring tapes, laser measurers, and survey-grade scanning equipment to collect measurements of crime scenes
- Testify at trials, hearings, grand juries, depositions, or other court proceedings
- Observe health and safety regulations as required
- Attend and participate in meetings, training sessions, seminars, and conferences as directed and/or required, sometimes out of town or the state
- Speak to public groups about job duties
- Use Computer-Aided Diagramming (CAD) software to create diagrams and demonstrable for court and debriefings
- Assist in maintaining lab and crime scene equipment, including chemicals and vehicles
- Utilizes photographic equipment such as, but not limited to DLSR cameras, full-frame cameras, mirrorless cameras, various lens, filters, light sources, tripods, and UV/IR equipment
- Other duties assigned
- Report directly to a supervisor

- Maintain confidentiality/security of files and information obtained in the course of employment
- Process/compile/disseminate record/public record information as directed by approving authority in accordance with lawful requirements
- Maintain continuity and operational efficiency by accurate and timely dissemination of information to Staff and co-workers
- Adhere to leave, overtime and attendance policies/procedures (i.e. arrive promptly, regular attendance at work, notification to supervisor regarding absence from work due to illness or untimely incidents, etc.)

- Work under high stress situations
- Operate a large vehicle such as a truck or van equipped with equipment to process a crime scene

- Exposure to inclement weather conditions, various odors, hazards and pathogens
- Not sedentary and may be subjected to long periods of standing, sitting, squatting

Primary Purpose
The Crime Scene Technician is responsible for crime scene investigations, documentation of the scene, evidence collection and processing and other duties assigned, both operational and clerical related to this position.
At a minimum, this position spends at least 65 percent of their time performing duties that involve the collection, examination, preservation, documentation, preparation, or analysis of human tissues or fluids or physical evidence having potential biological, chemical, or radiological hazard or contamination, or use chemicals, processes, or materials that may have carcinogenic or health-damaging properties in the analysis of such evidence, or the member must be the director supervisor of one of more individuals having such responsibility in accordance with F.S. 121.0512(3)(j).
Education and Qualification Requirements
• Must be able to achieve International Association of Identification (IAI) certification within two years of completing training
