- Responds to crisis situations to include, but not limited to, violent situations, house fires, motor vehicle crashes, drownings, cardiac arrests, behavioral health emergencies (or related field), hospital crisis requests, suicides, and community paramedicine appointments.
- Provides mobile crisis intervention services. Responds to emergency calls through the 911 system, provides stabilization services, emotional and psychological support, social support, and victim advocacy services to citizens of Goodyear and surrounding areas.
- Performs intervention and assessment services for individuals and family members experiencing a crisis event which requires assistance beyond services typically provided by Fire and Police. The crisis may result from a fire, domestic violence, sexual assault, medical emergencies, substance use or misuse, mental health emergencies, grief and loss, self-inflicted injuries, elder care issues, child abuse, neglect, exploitation, etc.
- Manages cases by determining patient’s needs, assembling services contacts, identifying and resolving problems, securing resources, coordinating with vendors and outside agencies, preparing reports, providing direction and assistance to clients.
- Counsels, advises and seeks to understand individuals’ immediate needs and assists individuals in identifying appropriate resources for additional assistance to fulfill those needs.
- Identifies social and community service agency options and makes appropriate recommendations to individuals.
- Coordinates referral services using various resources of community agencies, support groups and other community based resources.
- Responds to private citizens, schools, and social service agencies request for assistance.
- Refers and provides transportation to local treatment and other appropriate locations.
- Manages public relations by assisting with community events and providing information to government agencies and the general public.
- Provides confidential emotional and psychological support to first responders.
- Conducts community outreach and presents information on CR181 program to police officers, firefighters, partnering agencies and service clubs.
- Uses various software applications to generate statistical data for analytical purposes and/or maintain a database of information.
- Periodically reviews, updates and orders brochures, resources, etc.
- Tracks various calls daily, weekly, and/or monthly reports
- Assists with reviews and revisions for policies, protocols, SOG’s and other program materials.
- Monitors and guides volunteers with job performance and written material. Co-facilitates training of new volunteers.
- Assists in the evaluation of the operation of the programs administered. Recommends improvements and assists in implementing changes and objectives.
- Reports concerns directly to supervisor.
- Acts as a liaison between the City and numerous social service agencies and community organization boards/councils to analyze needs, listen and respond to specific concerns, identify possible solutions and establish effective working relationships with community representatives.
- Represents the department in multi-agency disciplinary committees related to victim advocacy and crisis intervention and prevention.
- Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures.
- Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions.
- Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.
- Formal Education/Knowledge: Work requires broad knowledge in a general professional or technical field. Knowledge is normally acquired through four years of college resulting in a Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
- Experience: Minimum of two years of experience in social work health navigation or crisis intervention. Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work successfully.
- Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid Driver’s License.
- Reading: Work requires the ability to read legal documents, general correspondence, memorandums and reports at a college level.
- Math: Work requires the ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as create statistical graphs and charts.
- Writing: Work requires the ability to write policies, procedures, office correspondence, technical reports, impact statements, and educational development materials at a college level.
- Managerial: Significant - The employee normally performs the duty assignment after receiving detailed instructions as to methods, procedures, and desired end results with little room for deviation. The immediate supervisor may, at times, provide close and constant review.
- Policy/Decision Making: Significant – The employee normally performs the duty assignment according to his or her own judgement, requesting supervisory assistance only when necessary. Projects and daily work are managed with little oversight; however, special assignments and significant work products may be reviewed upon completion. Must be able to may independent decisions and act on these decisions effectively in highly charged emergency and crisis situations.
- Technical Skills: Comprehensive Application - Work requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities. Must be able to assess the risk and/or needs for individuals who are experiencing a crisis event and provide appropriate interventions.
- Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: High - Interactions may involve support of controversial positions or the negotiation of sensitive issues or important presentations. Contacts may also involve stressful, negative interactions requiring high levels of tact and the ability to respond to aggressive interpersonal interactions.
- Attend the entirety of the Goodyear Employee Orientation (GEO)
- Attend all necessary CR training available in the metro phoenix area
- Attend weekly 1:1 meeting with the Crisis Response Coordinator
- Complete ride along with Ladder 184, Engine 188 or Engine 181
- Meet with community partners
- Demonstrate an understanding of the ImageTrend data collection system
- Attend Regional Crisis Response meetings when appropriate
- Understand MCT and codes
- Make at least 5 community connections with faith leaders, hospital, hotels, school navigators and west side Crisis Response programs
- Attend Goodyear Interfaith Meeting
- Attend Crisis Stabilization Training at Fire School, may extend if training is not available
- Complete Victims’ Rights training with Maricopa County Attorney’s Office
- Complete Crisis Response training manual
- Attend CIT International Conference, as budget allows
- Demonstrate the understanding of the City of Goodyear Fire Department
- Demonstrate an understanding of community paramedicine
- Complete tour and demonstrate an understanding of the Southwest Family Advocacy Center
- Complete Community Paramedicine training, incumbent may extend if training is not available.

The Goodyear Fire Department is seeking a dynamic and experienced professional for our newly added Crisis Response Specialist position. We are looking to grow our team due to the growth of the Community Response Team. The department has 165 employees, 7 all hazards response apparatus, 1 community response team and 1 ambulance, located at 7 fire stations with an annual budget of over $27M. The Community Response Team is an operational response vehicle that responds to high stress incidents, behavioral health, and crisis intervention emergencies. The new crisis response specialist will be expected to contribute to a collaborative and optimistic work environment, help create new initiatives, create efficiencies, and assist in moving the department forward to the next level of excellence.
Statement:
The ideal candidate will hold a Masters degree in social work, counseling, behavioral health or related field. Two years of crisis work or behavioral health case management. Provides crisis intervention and personal advocacy services for individuals and families as requested by Fire and Police. Duties include on-scene crisis intervention, de-escalation, victim advocacy, emotional support, guidance, and short-term case management for individuals, families, and fire and police personnel. This individual will conduct case management, referral and follow-up appointments with community paramedicine patients. This position is subject to shift and weekend work, standby duty or call back.
