      Position Overview
      The CRNFA is a professional practitioner who functions as both a caregiver and care manager. In the caregiver role, the CRNFA assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame implementing the Nursing Process and therapeutic use of self. In the dominant role of care manager, the CRNFA directs and oversees the care of other caregivers (nurses and non-nurses) via delegation, coordination, supervision, validation, and evaluation. The CRNFA also performs other duties as assigned. The CRNFA is committed to dealing with departmental issues involving self or other employees in a professional, forthright and impartial manner. The CRNFA is an expanded role and possesses skills such as providing exposure, tissue-handling, suturing, providing hemostasis and using surgical instruments. The collaborative and interdependent relationships of the surgeon-physician, nurse and patient are stressed. Clinical practice is based on the Core Curriculum for the CRNFA. Until successful completion of the certification exam the CRNFA will practice with a primary mentor surgeon for an internship. This mentor is a surgeon who has agreed to fulfill the mentoring role and who will assist the student in acquiring the knowledge and developing the skills necessary to adequately assist the surgeon and patient during surgical intervention. When feasible, the CRNFA will also be appointed as a mentor for the clinical internship.

      Education
      Graduate from NLN school of Nursing. Current MS state licensure. Bachelor of Science, RNFA Certification, and CNOR required. Completion of an AORN approved RNFA program.

      Certification
      Must complete and maintain BCLS certification upon hire and/or transfer. ACLS preferred.

      Experience
      Appropriate nursing experience within the last five years or evidence of a successful refresher program. Must have a minimum of two years of recent perioperative nursing experience. This experience must include demonstrated competency in the scrubbing, circulating, or first assisting roles of the intraoperative nursing dimension.

      Physical Demands
      Stands, turns, bends, stoops, lifts, climbs, and uses many physical motions in performing day-to-day activities. Auditory acuity to hear patient verbal communication and gather data using auscultory skills. Manual dexterity of hands and feet to ambulate 6-7 ½ hrs per 8 hr shift and adroitly manage multiple pieces of equipment/tubes/invasive lines. Must be able to stand for extended periods of time and do a great deal of walking without experiencing undue fatigue. Must have high energy level and be capable of handling high pressure situations. May be exposed to communicable disease or radiation.

      Mental Demands
      Keen mental faculties/assessment and decision-making skills in the management of acute and chronically ill patients. Communication/speaking/enunciation skills to receive and give information in person and by telephone. Emotional stability conductive to dealing with high stress level for 6-8 hours per 8 hour shift associate with care of acute/SO, rapidly changing patient conditions, emotional demands of patients and families, and demands of maintaining effective working relationships with peers, managers, physicians, and other health care workers.

      Special Demands
      Proof of current malpractice insurance coverage required.Standards of Clinical PracticeThese standards describe a competent level of care provided by the CRNFA as demonstrated by the Nursing Process. The Nursing Process is the critical thinking model that provides the basis for evidence based clinical decision-making and provision of care by the CRNFA.
