      The Portland Art Museum (referred to as Museum) invites applications for the position of Curatorial Coordinator for the Gallery Reimagination Project. This position bridges multiple departments, coordinating research, programming and a collection-based exhibition for the Portland Art Museum’s Gallery Reimagination Project, with a special focus on the new Black Art and Experiences initiative. Reporting to PAM’s Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art, they are a key team member in supporting a community-centered and artist-centered collaboration that will inform programming beginning in late 2025 when PAM opens the new Rothko Pavilion and expanded museum. The role serves as a main contact for community partners and artists in the planning, development and implementation of this programming. Tasks include attending small group convenings, conducting research, managing logistics and interdepartmental communication. The coordinator is part of the curatorial team and works closely with staff members in curatorial; learning and community partnerships; collections and exhibitions; and others. They are a core member of the Gallery Reimagination Project team and support concept development, interpretive and design development, implementation, and evaluation of the first set of programs of the Black Art and Experiences initiative. This position actively engages with community partners, partner artists and other external collaborators. The position is funded by a grant for two years.


      Essential Duties & Responsibilities

      • Supports the Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art with planning for the reinstallation of the contemporary collection and special exhibitions in the Jubitz Center for Modern and Contemporary Art (CMCA), including spaces for the Black Art and Experiences programming
      • Conducts research into the Museum’s exhibition history, collection holdings, and programmatic engagement with Black artists
      • Assists in organizing a series of convenings and community discussions in collaboration with PAM staff and external project consultant
      • Participate in internal workshops and meetings for community-centered programming
      • Establishes detailed project scheduling and workflow with community partners, artists and/or other collaborators on exhibitions and programs projected to begin in late 2025
      • Partners with the curatorial and LCP project leads on liaising between guest curators/collaborators and PAM departments including collections and exhibitions, marketing and communications, development, visitor services and protections services
      • Coordinates documentation of convenings and project meetings, and assists with an exhibition publication

      Secondary or Additional Responsibilities

      • Monitors deadlines, coordinates and facilitates cross-departmental planning meetings; creates agendas and follows up on action items
      • Drafts memos of understanding addressed to each collaborator; tracks budget and expenses; facilitates payments and honoraria to artists and community collaborators
      • Monitors exhibition spaces and updates needs related to accessibility considerations, interpretation and signage, visitor experience, artwork safety, among others
      • Performs other related duties as assigned

      • Clear and flexible communicator in person, on telephone/video call, email, and other digital platforms; understands and respects different communication styles
      • Experience coordinating complex projects
      • Comfortable with collaboration and can organize multiple tasks simultaneously
      • Knowledge of community-centered programming in arts organization settings
      • Employs project management best practices such as detailed project schedules, task assignments and deadlines, budget tracking; familiar with collaboration and project management software


      Education, Formal & Informal Experience, Training Required, Certification, Etc.

      • Combination of higher education and work experience in a creative field and/or in organizational administration
      • One to two years of prior arts administration experience preferred


      Job Conditions

      • Non-exempt, full-time status
      • Schedule/Hours: Monday through Friday, 9:00am - 5:00pm, 35 hours per week (This is a temporary, two year grant funded role)
      • Occasional evening or weekend
      • Occasional traveling to offsite meetings
      • Onsite with occasional work from home flexibility
      • Extensive computer work

      • This role is non-exempt, full-time, and with an expected end date two years from the start date
      • Budgeted compensation is within pay grade G ($23.67 min - $27.56 mid - $30.21 max), depending on experience
