      The Opportunity

      The Cyber Security Internship is an outstanding program where you’ll get to learn from experienced professionals and gain hands-on-experience in the Information Security organization. There are several different teams (ie. Network Security, Application Security, Cyber Incident Response, Penetration Testing, Threat Intelligence, Identity Access Management, etc..), each responsible for specific areas and involve various skill sets. The teams work together to ensure comprehensive protection and address different aspects of cybersecurity.

Our interns deliver innovative solutions to real business challenges, while building enduring relationships in a collaborative culture with their manager and an assigned mentor.

      The internship is based at USAA Corporate Headquarters in San Antonio, TX. Interns offered full-time roles may have the opportunity to work out of one of USAA’s satellite locations.

      What you'll do:

      Our Cyber Security Interns, work under direct supervision and following risk and compliance procedures and guidance, perform routine work assignments and problem resolution to support other team members, including the following tasks:

      • Responsible for ensuring that security requirements are adequately addressed in all aspects of a solution/application enablement and sustainment lifecycle.
      • Design, develop, code, integrate, and test functional security/technical solutions under direct supervision.
      • Developing comprehension of Site Reliability Engineering practices in their domain.
      • Ensures risks associated within their domain activities are optimally identified, measured, supervised, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
      • Monitors and troubleshoots systems, tools, and vendor integrations.
      • Collaborates with Security Analysts, IT and Business Partners to tune, harden, and improve Security solutions and technologies to keep up with the latest trends and threats.
      • Ensures risks associated with business activities are optimally identified, measured, supervised, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

      What you need to have:

      To qualify, you must be pursuing a degree from an accredited college or university, and plan to graduate after the final day of the internship. Most of our interns participate the summer between their junior and senior years. Our 2024 internship will start on May 29, 2024 and last through August 9, 2024.

      • Graduation date cannot be prior to August 10, 2024
      • Pursuing a bachelor’s degree or higher in Cyber Security, Management Information Systems, Computer Science, Identity Management, or a related field at a 4-year accredited university.
      • Up to 2 years of related experience in Security Engineering and/or Information Technology with a security focus to include demonstrated experience leading enterprise technology projects or initiatives.
      • Foundational knowledge of delivering technology solutions in all phases of a solution development lifecycle.
      • Fundamental experience with modern programming/scripting languages and frameworks.
      • Comprehension of security engineering activities using modern DevSecOps practices.
      • Rudimentary experience with agile delivery methods and deep desire to be flexible while delivering value early and often.
      • Foundational knowledge of platform engineering concepts on security standard processes in infrastructure/policy as code, security architecture design patterns, security vendor integrations, and CI/CD pipelines with built in application security controls.
      • General comprehension of cloud and emergent technologies such as: Public Cloud, Containerization, Security Data Lakes, ML/LLMs, GenAI, etc.

      What sets you apart:

      • Graduation date between August 2024 and July 2026
      • Experience with programming languages to include Python, Java, JavaScript, R, and/or SAS.
      • Experience with Application Programming Interfaces (APIs).
      • Experience with Data Analytics.
      • Familiarity with Agile Workflows and Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC).
      • Understanding of network and web protocols.

      What we offer:

      Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the hourly range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual hourly rate for this role may vary by location. The range for this position is: $23 - $34.

      Interns will receive an intern stipend to assist with expenses.
