      The Division of Translational Informatics, within the Department of Internal Medicine, is seeking a Data Scientist 1 with a focus on clinical research informatics in mental health, to support an R01 with funding through November 2026. This role involves working with large-scale healthcare data, employing machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques for advanced analytics in the field of mental health informatics research, specifically computational psychiatry. The candidate will be integral in developing statistical models for the study of Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and its co-occurring conditions, aiming to improve diagnostics, prevention, and treatment outcomes. The candidate will work with OHDSI tools and the OMOP common data model.

      Responsibilities include designing and developing research software to analyze EHR and administrative claims data from large databases, applying machine learning to identify undetected mental health phenotypes, and creating robust models to track PTSD decompensation/recovery. The role also encompasses comparing the risk of self-harm and hospitalization among PTSD treatments, and contributing to the largest comparative effectiveness studies of PTSD treatments, including psychotropic monotherapies, polypharmacy, and psychotherapy interventions.

      Additionally, the position requires documenting complex data workflows, testing on simulated and real-world datasets, generating experimental results, and incorporating algorithms into robust software packages for dissemination. The candidate will assist in writing research reports, manuscripts for publication, and preparing presentations, contributing to our long-term goal of improving the quality of psychiatric clinical decision-making and service delivery to Veteran and non-Veteran populations at high risk of self-harm and suicidality.

      Minimum Qualifications

      Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; at least 3 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

      Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

      Preferred Qualifications
      • Programming expertise with Python
      • Programming and visualization with R
      • Knowledge of relational database design and database queries
      • Experience working with large healthcare databases
      • Background and interest in mental health and mental health informatics
      • Master’s degree or higher in computer science, biostatistics, data science, or similar field
      • Expertise and knowledge of OHDSI tools and the OMOP common data model
