      The Opportunity

      The Research Information Systems & Computing (RISC) Department at Mass General Brigham seeks a talented and motivated Data Scientist/Biostatistician to join our expanding team. This role involves providing support for clinical research across multiple sponsored projects and working with interdisciplinary teams, a group of dedicated analysts and scientists, and our clients under the guidance of the program director. You will play a crucial role in deriving insights from intricate clinical data to enhance healthcare treatment possibilities and address various research inquiries. Your responsibilities will encompass diverse aspects, including managing medical record datasets, performing concept coding, establishing metadata, and undertaking other tasks associated with the creation, execution, and oversight of data to facilitate the enhancement of our client products. The candidate should have experience working with clinical data and understand healthcare delivery. This position requires in-depth knowledge of data and databases.

      Principal Duties and Responsibilities

      Lead research projects as determined by the research sponsor and the Program Director

      Stay updated on relevant medical literature and statistical methodologies to inform analysis approaches

      Provide guidance and assist clients in study design, statistical methods, analysis plan, and interpretation

      Conduct statistical analyses, including descriptive statistics and inferential tests, to support research projects

      Perform exploratory analyses to clarify the structure of data and how it can be used to support new insights into novel therapeutic options

      Implement new statistical or other mathematical methodologies as needed for specific models and analyses

      Assist protocol development, sample size calculation, and case report form (CRF) review

      Collaborate with team members to determine analytical requirements

      Develop SQL queries, views, and/or stored procedures to produce datasets as requested

      Create approaches/methodologies for analytically processing data sets to meet project requirements

      Normalize and extract, transform, and load (ETL) external datasets

      Plan, document, and implement systems that manage complex data flow and data update strategies

      Quality assurance and control activities for data-level testing. The Data Scientist/Biostatistician will be expected to create, perform, and document quality assurance of datasets, including the creation and documentation of formal test plans for unit and integrated data integrity testing

      Develop, test, execute, and document strategies for extracting and/or visualizing aggregate data

      Assist clients in understanding and interpreting data sets via regular discussions and/or data documentation

      Review data and statistical outputs to ensure accuracy, validity, and adherence to established protocols

      Communicate results and ideas with co-investigators, team members, and collaborators

      Effectively communicate statistical findings to non-statistical audiences, both in writing and through presentations

      Work collaboratively with the team to create and document policies regarding data usage, users, the Institutional Review Board (IRB), and the privacy committee

      Participate in group discussions on security strategies and implement security requirements to ensure patient privacy and comply with regulatory requirements

      Optimize joint development efforts through appropriate database use and project design

      Communicate progress status against project plans to the Program Director and key stakeholders

      Stay informed about relevant regulatory requirements and guidelines, ensuring that statistical analyses adhere to applicable standards

      A Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative field (e.g., Statistics, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Data Science, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics, Economics). Master’s degree preferred

      5+ years of experience in statistical programming/analyses (e.g., SAS, SPSS, Stata, Python, R, or MATLAB)

      5+ years of healthcare IT experience with clinical data expertise

      5+ years of hands-on experience with SQL coding

      Proficiency with SQL relational databases, preferably Microsoft SQL Server and SQL Server Management Studio Tools

      Solid understanding of SQL and constructing stored procedures

      Demonstrated expertise in reading, interpreting, and writing technical documentation, test plans, and functional and technical specifications

      Familiarity with at least one scripting language is advantageous (e.g., Python, Ruby, PHP, VBScript)

      Flexibility for a combination of education and experience as a substitute for requirements

      Skills/Abilities/Required Competencies

      Ability to apply advanced statistical techniques supporting scientific research projects. Modeling experiences would be a plus

      Knowledge of healthcare analytics preferred

      Preferred experience with hospital clinical information systems, e.g., EPIC

      Preference for familiarity with i2b2 or OMOP

      Self-motivated, willing to ask questions, and rapidly acquire new skills

      Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to take the initiative with a strong desire to embrace challenges and develop innovative solutions

      Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and the capability to manage and prioritize multiple assignments/projects concurrently and meet deadlines

      Ability to work independently as well as part of a team and be flexible in a multi-site environment

      Demonstrates effective time management with minimal supervision

      Excellent interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with cross-functional teams, including staff at all levels of the organization, including both technical and non-technical personnel

      Ability to review project deliverables for completeness, quality, and compliance with established project standards

      Ability to effectively translate business requirements to functional specifications

      Ability to successfully negotiate and collaborate with individuals of diverse skill sets, backgrounds, and levels within and outside the organization

      Openness to seeking and embracing guidance from senior personnel as needed

      Working Conditions

      Standard office environment with possible local travel to MGB sites

      Currently, this position is working remotely but may be required to return to a standard office environment in the future

      Supervisory Responsibility

      Direct reports: None; will indirectly provide leadership and guidance to less seasoned and new staff

      Fiscal Responsibility

      Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by effectively using RISC resources
