- Provides technical expertise and performs implementations, upgrades, and use of database software, including utilities, administrative tools, job scheduling, and scripting. Creates and schedules batch jobs. Writes scripts to accomplish administrative processing. Utilizes administrative tools to change, troubleshoot, and fix the database and data-related environments. Is expected to learn Blue KCs enterprise scheduling tool.
- Possesses technical knowledge or demonstrates the ability to research and interpret vendor documentation around features and licensing requirements for SQL Server and other various database offerings from Snowflake, Microsoft Azure cloud, AWS, etc..
- Ensures their skills are kept current with new technologies and database platforms that are brought into Blue KC or existing platforms for which they are assigned to be the primary DBA.
- Performs general database administration and development tasks as needed.
- Ensures compliance with corporate policy for security and privacy as it impacts database access and privileges. Enforces data integrity best practices to guarantee referential integrity, completeness, and accuracy of database contents. Ensures environmental security and monitoring mechanisms are performing properly to guarantee availability of the data to end users and applications.
- Ensures disaster recovery with appropriate backup and recovery processes, failover procedures, and testing to guarantee point-in-time recovery avoiding data loss. Ensures that all backup and recovery processes and procedures are kept current and in alignment with physical production data environments, and that modifications required by business continuity tests are completed in a timely manner.
- Participates in the on-call rotation and accepts and responds to automated notifications of support situations. Supports entire database environment, identifies peer team members for assistance, and provides support and guidance to DBAs in a timely manner to support the service levels required by the business.
- Communicates business and technical information and developments to users, technical staff, and management in both verbal and written form.
- Employs a continuous improvement approach while adhering to established procedures and processes.
- Creates or updates process documentation and flows as needed.
- Works with developers and end users to improve code and system design.
- May mentor other team members.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Systems Analysis, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 3 years of relevant technical experience.
- Experience administering a current release of one of the following platforms: Microsoft’s SQL Server, SQLDb in Microsoft Azure, Azure Synapse, MySQL on Linux, Snowflake, IBM’s UDB (DB2) on AIX, Cosmos DB in Microsoft Azure, PostGres, MongoDb, or MySQL in Microsoft Azure.
- Ability to write and understand intermediate-level SQL.
- Ability to resolve performance issues with databases and the underlying systems.
- Experience with scripting languages such as AIX shell script or powershell.
- Experience with Ansible and Python.
- Experience with cloud database platforms.
- Experience with coding and development practices.

The Database Engineer II designs, implements, and maintains complex databases following industry best practices in the Blue KC hybrid cloud technology landscape. This individual must be able to perform performance and query tuning in SQL Server or one other database platform in use at Blue KC. This individual protects company assets by safeguarding data integrity, access, and availability according to security procedures and policies and data governance best practices, while also providing service to data consumers. Individuals in this role, will need to stay abreast of the IT Policies and security requirements with respect to data and databases. Individuals in this role may need to train other employees in the organization on how to securely access a database and how effectively and efficiently query its contents. In the dynamic world of healthcare and IT, continuous learning is expected to remain current on new database platforms and technologies. Our ideal candidate will possess mid-level skills in SQL Server.
