      Job summary

      An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our friendly, supportive and forward thinking community dental team. This post is aimed at dentists looking to gain experience and skills within the CDS, whilst being fully supported by senior dentists and specialists. This is an informal development post which can be tailored to meet individual needs. We have a strong supportive culture for education and training within the team. The successful candidate will be working across all of our disciplines initially and will be encouraged to gain the skills equivalent to a Tier 2 practitioner in Special Care Adult and/or Paediatric dentistry. Training and mentorship in sedation will form part of this development. This is a permanent salaried role with scope for progression to Senior Dental Officer.

      Plymouth Community Dental Services (PCDS), is a part of Livewell Southwest CIC. We provide specialist-leddentistry for people who cannot receive dental care from a general dental practitioner including. Our core service includes:

      • Oral Surgery
      • Paediatric Dentistry- Routine and Special Care
      • Special Care Dentistry for Adults
      • Urgent Dental Care

      As part of these services we offer treatment under sedation and in partnership with University Hospitals Plymouth, under general anaesthesia.

      Main duties of the job

      The post holder will provide a full range of NHS dental care (with support where required) to:

      • Routine and Special Care Paediatrics
      • Special Care Adult patients
      • Patients requiring oral surgery
      • Patients requiring urgent dental care

      Support will be given to gain experience in carrying out treatment under sedation and general anaesthesia.

      Job description

      The post holder will be a qualified dentist.

      This role allows the post holder to undertake a range of duties within Plymouth Community Dental Services (PCDS). The focus on this post will be on informal development and training allowing the post holder to gain skills above the level of a general dental practitioner in paediatric and special care adult dental provision. There will also be the opportunity to undertake minor oral surgery.

      The post holder will be encouraged to develop skills under the guidance of Specialist clinicians in MOS, Special Care and Paediatrics and undertake further training in conscious sedation and GA exodontia within a secondary care setting. The aim of this post is to gain the skills required of a Tier 2 practitioner in Paediatric and Special Care (Adult) dentistry. Progression to Senior Dental Officer (Band B) can be considered once deemed to be working at this level, assessed via annual appraisal and subject to a role becoming available. Typically, this may take 3-5 years. This is an informal development opportunity and does not attract a National Training Number.
