      What You'll Be Doing

      The Wake County EMS Department seeks an individual with the drive, energy and innovation to manage field operations for one of the nation’s leading EMS agencies. The Deputy EMS Director of Operations (EMS Operations Chief) oversees and manages all EMS field operations for North Carolina’s capital county. As one of five Deputy EMS Directors, the Deputy EMS Director of Operations is a senior leadership team member and reports directly to the EMS Chief Operating Officer. Your vision, leadership and expertise will directly influence our team and the care we provide. We expect you to foster a work environment that is not only safe but also welcoming.

      Key Responsibilities:

      • Manage field operations, including establishing deployment strategies, response plans, operational policies, procedures, and standards
      • Establish system performance metrics and monitor system performance based on these metrics
      • Create a positive team environment from the front lines to senior management
      • Directly and indirectly supervise employees, drive positive department culture, embrace and lead diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility, evaluate employee performance, and provide positive feedback through coaching/mentoring and general feedback sessions
      • Drive operational improvement initiatives and provide strategic oversight in collaboration with all teams and agencies
      • Contribute to our culture of safety by developing and monitoring metrics that keep our staff and residents safe by using a root cause analysis review process
      • Communicate with various groups and individuals in both written and oral form
      • Prepare and present reports/presentations to educate, promote and inform about the EMS department and programs
      • Respond to emergencies, including as a primary care provider, as a command member and to observe system and provider performance
      • Respond to significant events either in the field or as a member of the emergency operations center

      Wake County EMS is a cutting-edge emergency medical services system that is responsible for providing EMS services throughout Wake County including within each of the county’s 12 local municipalities. We have a well-developed mobile integrated health (community paramedicine) and research programs. We responded to over 127,000 requests for 911 EMS services in 2022.       The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

      • Bachelor's degree in Emergency Medical Services, Business Administration or related field
      • Five years of experience in Emergency Medical Services
      • Valid Driver's License and "safe" driving record
      • Certification as Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic
      • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

      Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

      • Master’s degree in Emergency Medical Services or equivalent
      • Three years of EMS supervisory or management-level experience

      • Ability to interact and communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization with tact and diplomacy
      • Ability to recognize and evaluate proficiencies and difficulties of an employee’s job performance, provide constructive feedback and guidance to improve noted difficulties and strengthen noted proficiencies
      • Thorough knowledge of local, state and federal laws and regulations applicable to emergency medical services, employment and the general workplace.
      • Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
      • Ability to demonstrate excellence in critical thinking, communications and conflict resolution
      • Ability to exercise significant judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting policies and procedures

      Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 8:30am to 5:15pm, variability based on need, including after-hours large-scale emergencies

      Hiring Range: $92,993 to $125,541

      Emergency Service Worker Statement
