- Patrols assigned areas to ensure the security of life and property, observes situations, and deters crime by providing high visibility; maintains good relations with the general public and interacts with the public to resolve issues, gain compliance, and build trust.
- Responds to suspicious activities and answers calls for service.
- Enforces state and local laws and ordinances; issues verbal warnings and citations; pursues and apprehends suspects and requests assistance as required.
- Assists in crime scene control and investigation, including interviews and interrogations, identification of witnesses, and the collection and preservation of physical evidence; takes statements in connection with suspected criminal activities.
- Restores order, protects life and property, and maintains the peace at public gatherings and in conflict situations.
- Prepares and documents cases, completes reports, and forms, and prepares and maintains other logs and records.
- Serves warrants and civil papers to County residents; researches and locates person to be served.
- Assists and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in investigations and arrests.
- As assigned, serves as a court bailiff, including maintaining security and order in the courtroom and court premises, preserving order among participants and spectators during court proceedings, escorting the jury to and from areas outside the courtroom, calling participants to the stand and enforcing courtroom rules of behavior.
- As assigned, supervises incarcerated persons at detention facility.
- Transports persons to and from various locations such as jail, courts, hospitals, and other institutions.
- Retrieves, identifies, and returns found property and/or evidence to owners.
- Provides emergency aid and assistance to incapacitated persons, and requests additional response.
- Provides information, directions, and other services and assistance to the public.
- Coordinates with and serves as back up to other local law enforcement agencies.
- Performs related duties as assigned.
- Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade.
- Deputy Sheriff I: None required.
- Deputy Sheriff II : One (1) year of sworn law enforcement experience at a level equivalent to the classification of Deputy Sheriff I with Kings County.
- Possession of a valid California driver's license issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles at the time of appointment.
- Possession of a Certification of Completion from a Basic California State Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Academy.
- Possession of a valid certificate of completion of Penal Code 832 Laws of Arrest and Firearms issued by the P.O.S.T. to be maintained throughout employment.
- Possession of an appropriate Basic Certificate issued by the P.O.S.T., or an equivalent examination, to be maintained throughout employment.

The Kings County Sheriff's Office is actively seeking individuals to join their law enforcement team. They are specifically looking for both entry-level candidates and experienced law enforcement officers who possess a certificate of completion from a California Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Certified Basic Law Enforcement Academy for patrol assignments. Additionally, they are encouraging current Kings County Reserve Deputy Sheriffs to apply for these positions. This indicates that they are seeking individuals who are already familiar with the area and the workings of the sheriff's office.
CURRENTLY ATTENDING THE ACADEMY?Applicants currently attending a P.O.S.T. approved academy may compete by submitting an application. However, any offers of employment are conditioned upon satisfactory completion of the academy. Upon completion of the academy, you will be responsible for providing the Sheriff's Office and Human Resources with copies of the certificate of academy completion.Future vacancies for this position may be filled from the eligible list to be established. Deputy Sheriff I - $32.53 - $39.71 Hourly, $67,662.40 - $82,596.80 Annually

Receives immediate (Deputy Sheriff I) to general (Deputy Sheriff II) supervision from assigned Sheriff’s Sergeant or higher ranking sworn personnel. Exercises no direct supervision over staff.CLASS CHARACTERISTICSDeputy Sheriff I : This is the entry-level sworn classification in the Deputy Sheriff series. Initially under close supervision, incumbents learn and perform routine law enforcement duties. As experience is gained, assignments become more varied, complex, and difficult; close supervision and frequent review of work lessen as an incumbent demonstrates skill to perform the work independently. Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of positions at the II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods. Work is usually supervised while in progress and fits an established structure or pattern. Exceptions or changes in procedures are explained in detail as they arise.Deputy Sheriff II : Thisis the journey-level sworn classification in the Deputy Sheriff series. Positions at this level are distinguished from Deputy Sheriff I by the performance of the full range of duties as assigned, working independently, and exercising judgment and initiative. All completed applications and supplemental questionnaires will be reviewed. Depending upon the number of applicants who meet the minimum qualifications, the selection process may include the following:
(1) Screening committee (pass/fail) and/or
(2) Written examination (pass/fail). Depending upon the number of applicants with passing scores, the number of applicants invited to participate in the oral examination may be limited and/or
(3) Oral examination (100%). This may include a written practical component (100%) to determine placement on the eligible list.
(4) Background investigation (pass/fail). Applicants must undergo and pass a thorough and detailed personal background investigation. These investigations include employment/credit histories, arrest/criminal records, drug/alcohol use and personal conduct. In addition applicants are required to undergo and pass a psychological examination (pass/fail), a drug screening, and a medical examination (which may include a physical agility examination).
