      Marks is hiring a Design Director, Packaging Design for our Marks Chicago, Cincinnati, or NYC studio!

      About the Team

      The Packaging Design Group is powered by a large, dynamic and multiskilled team of creatives. This Group lives and breathes packaging design in all its expressions and outputs, from printed packaging to digital eCommerce. They work across a range of clients, brands and categories – from beauty to food and coffee to spirits. The team is uniquely constructed to deliver solutions that range from packaging design refreshes and redesigns, to new product innovations, category and line extensions. This powerhouse group manages every scale of a project from one-off “gotta have it” new editions to some of the Globe’s most iconic and large scale private brand programs.

      About the Role

      As a Design Director, you will support the Creative Director in fostering creative excellence within the team across the full spectrum of Packaging Design. You’ll manage projects and client relationships, ensuring that the creative vision solves a business problem successfully, on budget, and on time. You will uphold the agency’s position as a collaborative subject matter expert for our clients, and work across our teams throughout North America. Working with the Creative Director, Design Directors are responsible for leading, presenting and defending designs and strategic solutions to our clients.

      The Design Director plays a critical role in our culture. They lead, mentor, and support the development of fresh young talent. They work alongside collaborators within the Marks Creative Group at large, the Client Services, and Operations team. The participate in critical internal initiatives ranging from Internship, Mentorship and Training Programs, and showcase our teams and talent in inspirational roundtable forums.

      On any given day you might

      • Consult with Client Services on project proposals and timelines
      • Lead the development overarching creative ideas and concepts on projects ranging from packaging design refreshes, new sub-brands, and category extensions
      • Provide expert direction on the development of physical packaging solutions, as well as emerging digital content channels and eComm
      • Actively participate in brainstorming sessions and internal reviews
      • Lead and mentor your team of Creative Packaging Design experts – being responsible for their growth, development and performance
      • Work with your team of Designers to ensure integrity in execution through packaging rollouts and adaptations
      • Work with Project Managers and Schedulers to resource and maintain timelines across multiple projects
      • Shape and craft compelling presentation narratives to support and sell through creative concepts
      • Consult and provide Packaging Design subject matter expertise with clients and internal stakeholders alike
      • Uphold creative integrity and ingenuity by keeping up to date with the latest Packaging trends and innovations
      • Support culture-building initiatives which serve to unite and inspire the entire agency to care passionately about one another, our clients and our work

      The Ideal Person

      • Has experience in leading creative teams
      • Is a strategic problem solver with experience in Consumer Packaged Goods
      • Is a strong communicator and can confidently convey the rationale behind design solutions
      • Loves digging into problems and seeing beyond the “ask"
      • Can guide the extended team through complex packaging executions and approaches
      • Understands consumer purchase behavior and can think in design systems
      • Has an excitement for their discipline that is contagious
      • Has an understanding of packaging print processes and their technical limitations
      • Brings a roll-up-your-sleeves-and-get-it-done attitude

      You Bring

      • Diploma/Degree in Communication, Graphic, or Packaging Design (or related field)
      • 7+ years (minimum) working in a Packaging Design role, with Director level management experience
      • Well-rounded portfolio showcasing excellent understanding of brand building and packaging solutions
      • A deep understanding of Mac OS, Adobe Creative Suite (Expert knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign), Microsoft Word, Excel, and Keynote
