  Job Title: Development Research/Technician

  Salary/Grade: £29k - £35k

  Location: Peterborough

  About IPSD

  Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat® and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives.   Job Summary:

  To assist engineers in conducting technical investigations of current and future product, working predominantly with engine components or systems to validate for performance and durability. Investigations and tests will be both in a laboratory and field environment.

  What You Will Do:

  • Assist in development of fixtures, concepts, and prototypes for research and development and market analysis.
  • Make detailed observations, analyzing data, and interpreting results.
  • Compile results and preparing technical reports and documentation of outcomes.
  • Assist in the building, testing, and analysis of prototypes.

  • Documents test process and results; prepares and analyzes defect-tracking reports.
  • Summarizes features of a specific product-testing process and associated procedures.
  • Tests components for compliance with functional requirements and established conventions.
  • Discusses and compares usability, safety and integration testing.
  • Develops product-testing procedures; participates in selecting testing environment and tools.
  
  Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.
  Level Basic Understanding:
  • Explains where to locate basic help facilities and troubleshooting guides.
  • Discusses basic concepts behind a systematic approach to solving technical problems.
  • Identifies available resources and support systems for troubleshooting.
  • Describes problem identification, reporting and escalation procedures.
  
  

  Top candidates may also have:

  • The ability to lay strain gauges and train others within the research team in this area
  • The ability to set up electronic instrumentation, software/hardware & data capture
  • Experience of setting up and running electro dynamic shakers
