PERFORMS DUTIES PERTAINING TO METALLURGICAL TESTING AND EVALUATION OF MATERIALS AND COMPONENTS IN SUPPORT OF METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS. PRIMARY DUTIES INCLUDE PREPARING, EXAMINING, AND EVALUATING VARIOUS MATERIALS (PRIMARILY METALS) USING METALLOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES, MECHANICAL TESTING TECHNIQUES, CHEMICAL ANALYSIS, IMAGE ANALYSES, AND OPTICAL AND/OR SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY. THESE TECHNIQUES ARE USED WHEN PERFORMING ROUTINE AND NON-ROUTINE ANALYSES INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO MATERIAL DEDICATION, COMPONENT DAMAGE ASSESSMENTS, FAILURE ANALYSES, AND RESEARCH PROJECTS. ANALYSES OF A NON-ROUTINE NATURE MAY REQUIRE IDENTIFYING AND RECOMMENDING CHANGES TO THE PROCESSES OR PROCEDURES. PROVIDES EXPERT TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO LABORATORY METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS AND CUSTOMERS BY DISCUSSING RESULTS OF ANALYSES, RECOMMENDING ADDITIONAL TESTING, AND/OR PROVIDING RECOMMENDATIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS AS APPROPRIATE. PREPARES TEST AND CALIBRATION REPORTS, AS REQUESTED BY METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS. UTILIZES TQM PRINCIPLES AND PRACTICES TO RESOLVE PROBLEMS AND ACHIEVE PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENTS. RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THAT ALL WORK PERFORMED IN SUPPORT OF THE NUCLEAR POWER INDUSTRY IS PERFORMED IN ACCORDANCE WITH QA/QC PROCEDURES AND REGULATORY REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS SPECIALIZED WORK. FROM TIME TO TIME INCUMBENT MAY BE ASKED TO TECHNICALLY REVIEW THE TEST DATA DEVELOPED BY LOWER-GRADE TECHNICIANS OR OTHER TECHNICIANS. A YEAR'S DEGREE IN A RELATED SCIENCE IS REQUIRED AND FOUR YEARS OF LABORATORY WORK EXPERIENCE IN THE AREA OF METALLOGRAPHIC SAMPLE PREPARATION, ETCHING MICROSTRUCTURES, HARDNESS MEASUREMENTS, AND MECHANICAL TESTING. EXPERIENCE IN THE OPERATION OF SCANNING ELECTRON MICROSCOPY (SEM) AND ENERGY DISPERSIVE ANALYSIS (EDS) IS DESIRABLE. MUST BE WILLING & MEDICALLY QUALIFIED TO WORK ROTATING SHIFTS & WORK OVERTIME PERMITTED BY COMPANY PROCEDURES DURING PEAK PERIODS.
