      Catholic Charities of Baltimore, Caritas House is currently seeking a Dietary Assistant, who will be responsible for transportation of food, assisting with serving meals and for cleaning the dining and kitchen areas.

      Caritas House is a community for seniors that provides additional services that help our residents remain independent and safe. Our dining program provides our residents with three meals a day and access to healthy snack options. The Dietary Assistant helps prepare the dining areas for meals and ensures the residents' needs are being met during mealtimes. The position offers opportunities to learn food safety and food preparation techniques. The work schedule is 20 hour per week, working every other weekend. The hours are 11:00am – 7:30pm.

      JOB DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

      • Respects resident’s rights by recognizing the dignity of each individual and maintaining confidentiality of all elder information.
      • Responsible for providing the highest quality service to all customers in a way that represents “Cherishing the Divine Within” and the pursuit of excellence.
      • Sets up Caritas dining room to prepare for each meal.
      • Ensures that meals served to elders match ticket.
      • Monitors the dining area during meals and assists elders as needed.
      • Completes food temperature logs as required and reports problems to dining services supervisor.
      • Applies established dietary procedures for storing, handling, preparing, and transporting food to avoid injuries and contamination and to ensure food safety and infection control.
      • Checks food expiration dates before use; discards non-reusable food items.
      • Wears gloves, hair net, and appropriate dress and practices proper hand washing and personal hygiene.
      • Cleans dining room and kitchen areas as scheduled or as needed, according to established procedures including:
        • load and operate the dishwashing machine,
        • clean and store dishes and tableware,
        • cleans chairs and tables,
        • cleans food storage areas
        • sweep and mops floors
        • clean cooking equipment,
      • Maintains food storage areas, freezer, and refrigerators in a clean, properly arranged manner and according to established department guidelines.
      • Empties trash and cleans trash cans.
      • Maintains required records according to established guidelines.
      • Maintain a good working rapport with all staff of Caritas House and other Jenkins Community programs to assure food service can be properly maintained and meet the needs of the residents.
      • Attends and participates in staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
      • Performs other related duties as assigned

      MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTS:

      • High School or GED and 1-2 years’ experience in institutional food service, healthcare is preferred. Must be Serve-safe certified or become certified within 6 months of employment.
      • Must have the ability to read, write/print legibly in order to carry out the duties of the job.
      • Must also be able to follow oral and written directions, maintain confidentiality and have a working knowledge of food handling, storage, and preparation procedures.
      • Must also be able to use sound judgement; demonstrate sensitivity and patience; identify and respond to residents in need of assistance; and work effectively with a culturally diverse aging population.
      • Position requires the ability to move freely throughout the building including reaching, bending, pushing, lifting at least 45 pounds, and standing 85% of the time.
      • Must possess visual and hearing acuity and clear speech sufficient to perform the essential functions of the job effectively.

      SKILLS / COMPETENCIES:

      • The Dietary Assistant reports directly to the Dining Services Supervisor and works under direct supervision.
      • The incumbent is expected to abide by the health department regulations as related to handling food; to respond to the needs of residents in the dining area and to those to whom meals are delivered and to report problems/concerns to the supervisor following established procedures.
