Director, Public Affairs
The American Express Corporate Affairs & Communications (CA&C) team is a strategic function that works to enhance and protect the continued strength of the American Express brand through public relations, social media and content, colleague communications and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
This NYC-based position will be an integral member of the CA&C team supporting the American Express Global Commercial Services (GCS) division. GCS provides a wide portfolio of payments solutions and expertise to support businesses of all sizes across their many needs. The GCS division serves millions of business customers around the world, whether through corporate and small business cards, supplier payments solutions, working capital, or financing solutions. American Express is the number one issuer of commercial cards globally and the number one issuer of small business cards in the U.S.
This role is responsible for driving effective public relations and external communications activities, with a focus on business-related topics, Amex payment and money movement products for businesses and corporations, and Amex advocacy and support for small businesses. A key component of this role will be supporting “beyond the Card” initiatives for businesses, including business checking accounts, business loans, and digital payment products. This person will also provide counsel to key executives and business partners, identify opportunities to share news about GCS initiatives, create and execute proactive media and influencer marketing strategies, and manage issues to protect and enhance the American Express brand. The director will serve as a company spokesperson and will work closely with press on behalf of the business unit, and will work alongside GCS marketing, product, and internal communications teams. This role will report to the U.S.-based vice president, Corporate Affairs & Communications, who supports external communications for the GCS business.
Responsibilities:
· Develop and implement overarching communications strategies, approaches, and content; including clear, concise, and compelling writing tailored to relevant audiences and channels. Communications initiatives will support the business goals of GCS, including driving awareness of the value we provide to businesses of all sizes and across all industries.
· Counsel GCS executives and support their external communications needs.
· Identify unique and newsworthy opportunities to promote the GCS business, including for the Business Blueprint suite of products for small businesses.
· Develop strong relationships with press and industry stakeholders to promote GCS advancements and executive perspectives.
· Manage select senior executives’ LinkedIn presence, including advising on the right content for the channel and writing copy to amplify announcements and company news.
· Lead social media influencer campaigns.
· Support involvement with key industry engagement groups and conferences, ensuring the GCS team has a public voice on important industry trends and topics.
· Maintain awareness of industry-level and competitor news, keeping teams informed and providing relevant insights.
· Partner with colleagues globally to ensure GCS products and services are accurately and consistently represented through press announcements and initiatives in local markets.
· Help oversee and manage U.S.-based PR agency.
· Represent GCS as a spokesperson responding to media inquiries.
· Measure and report on results of communications efforts, including key learnings and areas of opportunity.
Qualifications:
· 7-15 years of public relations experience, with established ability to influence and counsel internal and external stakeholders and apply strong judgement while managing multiple priorities and a deadline-driven work environment.
· Significant experience counseling top executives and driving their external communications needs.
· Business-savvy communications expert with meaningful experience in B2B, small business, payment products and/or fintech partnerships.
· Strong strategic and creative thinker, with proven experience leading winning communications strategies and plans.
· Superior written, verbal and media relations skills, with proven media relations results.
· Proven ability to quickly learn and absorb complex and technical subjects and translate material into comprehensive and easy-to-understand communications messages.
· Creativity in developing and managing stories with national, local and trade press.
· Proven experience in managing PR agencies and/or teams; agency experience a plus.
· Ability to think independently, quickly and apply good judgment.
· Needs to be a self-starter, strong collaborator, good project manager, and able to work independently, while operating as an adaptable team player.
· Strong attention to detail and organization.
Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually + bonus + equity (if applicable) + benefits
